DIY Pomander Ball trial

As the real ones would have cost me $130 each (and I need six! Yikes!!) I decided to make my own pomander balls using silk flowers. I decided on white roses, because they looked the most real, and I can probably sell them again to another bride who can change out the ribbon color. I am using a sheer fuschia ribbon for mine. I started on them this weekend, but I had to stop because I ran out of flowers while I was doing the first one! Apparently I picked a bigger styrofoam ball than I needed, because adding the flowers make these things huge! Too late now, I already have too much invested. Now the Michaels and the Hobby Lobby stores are out of white roses. Great. My project is on hold until more come in I guess. Here are some pictures of how the first one turned out. The jewel pendant hanging from the bottom looks prettier in person. I think I ended up spending about $45 for all the materials. Not bad! Andrea, These turned out gorgeous!!! Especially love the jewel. It adds such an elegant touch. About how big do you think they ended up? They don't look overly large by any means compared to your hand.

Thanks Beth!! I think they actually turned out to be the perfect size for aisle decorations. It seemed really big when I was making it though, and I was so mad that I ran out of flowers!

Great job!...it looks really good!!  What size balls did you purchase and how did you affix the ribbon to the ball?  Would you advise to prepare them in advance or when you get to Hawaii...i assume they will take up a lot of luggage space although weight will not be an issue. TIA! J. :-)

Look awesome!  Question for you, would you wait to assemble those when you get there or somehow ship them?  I would love to do more stuff like this but worry about how to get it all there!

Thanks everyone! Maui2011- I think I used the 5 inch balls (I'm at work, I'll check when I get home!) To attach the ribbon, I wrapped floral wire around the ball to divide it into 4 sections. You can kind of see that in the second picture. Then I tied the ribbon to the top of the ball on the wire, and the jewel to the bottom part.Amyj513- I would recommend doing them ahead of time if you can. They take awhile, and you run the risk of not finding enough flowers! I am hoping enough will come in over the next few months for me to finish. To get them over there, I think I'm going to assign a ball to six different people who are coming and threaten their lives to get them there safely! Haha. They can probably just carry them on the plane. Two of my bridesmaids live pretty close, as well as FI's family so I trust them.

Looooooove those! They look great, and I second Kaesha in that they look like they're all different sizes, which really adds to the realism. Very classy.

Love them! What a great DIY project! Also, another great way to save some money is to go to hobby lobby's web site, they usually have 40% off coupons that you can print out.
