Dan Sanchez????

I have heard so many great things about Dan, but his website is down and I don't know how to contact him to get prices. Anyone know how much he charges and how to get a hold of him? Also, is there anyone on Maui that is as great as him?

Thank you! :)

will be billed at the rate of $100 per hour; time permitting)

    Bridesmaids/Guests styling: $95.00

Mother(s): $75.00 Price may very depending on the style, this includes minimal blow-drying/curling style

Junior Bridesmaids and Flower Girls: $65.00 (12 and under)

Blow Drying: $50.00 per individual (suggested for fine/thin or frizzy/unruly hair types)

Flat Ironing: $50.00 per individual (suggested for damaged ends and for smoothing all hair types)
    [/QUOTE]

If you do think seriously about using Dan, drop me a PM and I can share some advice that would have made my life much easier had I known.

I'm using Dan...he's been great so far.  The only negative i've ever heard about him is that he can run late. I am doing the bridal package...just cannot remember from the top of my head re: the cost but it includes a trail, day of and travel.

You should look at the Maui Planning site at the top of the page...i believe a pricelist is there as well.

Tanq, do you mind sharing your experience with me as well?

    Thx. J. :-)

Ok, well since there is so much interest, I will just post it here.  Dan is one of the reasons I am stalling on my vendor reviews -- it pains me to say it because it's harsh, and because Dan was very contrite about the entire experience and really tried to make it up to us as best he could.  But I do want to share it so you ladies know what to insist on and plan for to avoid the same issues.

Let me start by saying the process of working with Dan, scheduling the trial, sharing my vision of what I want, and also just interacting with him as a person...he gets an A.  No contest.  He's really great.

But on the day of, he almost singlehandedly cratered the entire day for us.  He ran way behind, his assistant caused issues, and double booked another wedding right after us -- he says he can do that because he's THAT GOOD, and it's probably true most days, but it was not true for us.

First of all, the first style Dan put in my hair was nothing like the one we agreed upon in the trial and I hated it.  So we had to start over -- he was very accommodating of that & had no issues doing it over.  But it added maybe 20 minutes.

Then, Dan sent his assistant to DH's room to help him "clean up the edges" since DH cuts his own hair.  DH wears a fauxhawk and he knows I love when he wears it big so he had grown it out for the wedding.  The assistant proceeded to take about 2-3 inches off the top without a mirror in front of him so he could stop her.  I got an MMS that showed DH with almost a military crew cut (I exaggerate a little).  He was livid, I was sad, and Dan "sent the assistant home" without consulting me on how it would impact the timeline (honestly I didn't need her sent home).  That added about 30 minutes for Dan to "fix" DH's hair, and god knows how much more because the rest of the ladies' hair were now single threaded.

Based on Dan's advice, we had planned 3 hours for me to get ready, and 4 for the others.  I think ended up being over an hour late for first look.  We had only 5 minutes for that moment and 15 minutes for family portraits before the ceremony (I planned for 2.5 hours).

In the end, 6 of us had our hair done.  Our officiant's hair was gorgeous, my MIL was fine - no complaints there.  DH's was a catastrophe.  My SIL never got her hair finished but now I don't remember why.  My sister/MOH never got her hair finished -- she wore her hair half down, and the curls were nearly straight when the ceremony started.  And I'm not sure if my hair was finished, but it looked very sloppy by the time photos rolled around.

    So, moral of the story:
    - If you go with Dan, buffer buffer buffer
    - Be very clear & prescriptive with your expectations
    - Be clear you would like him not to double book you, before or after, and consider paying a little extra if needed to hold that guaranteed time
    - Expect that it will still be a little loosey goosey & hectic and that you'll need to roll with it.

My sloppy hair & DH's hair at 6:30pm:

MOH's hair at the start of the ceremony:

    Sigh.

Man, I can't believe what happened.....  But thanks Tanq for being honest and stepping up to the plate and giving a review about your experience.  I really think it's important to share both good and bad experiences that we've had with vendors, because sometimes, there are good "lessons learned" from these stories.  I think you gave a more than fair/balanced account of what happened, plus it's probably painful to recall that particular aspect of the day....so, thanks for contributing this!  :)

Since this vendor is so popular on the board, I'm quite shocked that this happened.  However, I do recall one previous knottie (way back) who also had a bad experience with him...so this isn't the first bad review.  Let's hope that it was an off-day...I'm sure it was!  FWIW Tanq, the rest of your wedding looked absolutely gorgeous and glad you were able to salvage most of your timeline in the end!

    P.S.
I haven't shared this before, but during the planning process, I couldn't find many hair stylists on Maui....plus they were SO super expensive.  I wasn't impressed with their portfolios either, not even the Dan/Jess combo (maybe it's just me and my weirdo taste!).  H&M is a biggie for me, because I'm pretty competent at doing it myself.

I haven't written reviews yet, but we took an entirely different approach and hired someone off-island (from Oahu).  I don't think any knotties have done this before....brides usually fly in videographers and photographers, but I figured, why not a stylist?  FWIW, a hair/makeup stylist plus airfare/travel from Oahu ended up costing less than hiring a stylist on Maui (for styling bride, groom, mother, and three BMs).  Maybe it's because of competition, rates are more reasonable.  Plus, she was FAST!  My WC and BMs were doubtful, but she clocked 45 minutes per person H&M (all by herself).  Plus we loved what she did and we're probably as picky as it gets!  :)  Let me know if anyone's interested and I can provide a more complete review of our stylist...

Hiring an off-island stylist isn't for everyone though...you might have to forgo having a trial.  We had our e-session in Oahu the previous year...I ended up loving what she did, so decided to keep the same stylist for the wedding.  Hope this helps someone out....

fabutan, thank you.  I don't know why I struggle so much with sharing that.  I guess I just like Dan, and truly believe he was contrite & tried to make it up to us.  I am not sure if it's encouraged him to change his practices to avoid this, and so I thought it would be best to share.

Re: bringing H&M from another island.  Brilliant.  I'm bummed I didn't even think of it.  Photo & video?  No worries.  Officiant?  Also imported.  But H&M...darn it, I should have considered it.  I have to say, I think I looked nicer at the AHR than on my wedding day, but oh well.  I still got to marry DH!  :)  I should post our photos soon... hm.

I'm really shocked and horrifed by his sloppy work. That's unacceptable. Methinks he's gotten a little too big for his britches, perhaps.

I know, although I loved him and the way everything turned out, of the Jess/Dan combo, Jess was my superstar.

EDIT: I also think it's really good you posted this. It's a very good, honest review.

I am have to say she did an amazing job on my hair.  She was so sweet,
she was on time, professional, affordable!  She wrapped my hair with orchids
that dripped down my shoulder, just gorgeous!! She even had eyelash extentions,
she touched up my make-up and just simply made me shine!  Thank you Heather!

Thanks for the info Tanq!!! I have hired the duo (Dan/Jessica) and I will be seeing them both for trials this Sept. I will be sure to give some updates on their work and whether or not they are timely. It's hard to write not so steller things about people you truly think are great. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us!!!

YAY, thanks ladies.  I'm glad it was helpful for me to post it.   I truly hope your experiences with Dan & Jess are fabulous.  And yay about the smile on my face.  The 14 days surrounding our wedding, I was just so deliriously happy nothing could wipe the smile off my face.  Not our venue flooding in the tsunami, not the hair fiasco, not family / friend drama...I got to marry DH and that alone was simply magical :)

Thanks for posting this. Makes me a little nervous since this is who I'm using, but I think I'm going to stay with him.  There's only me getting me hair done, so I am crossing my fingers it will be alright.
