Music for our ceremony

Hi everyone! We are getting married October 12th at the Sheraton Maui and are looking for someone to play music during our ceremony and cocktail hour. Our wedding planner sent us some muscians and everyone she suggested was outrageously priced, does anyone have suggestions?

Can you give us more information about what you're looking for (instrumental vs vocal, many musicians or just one) and what you consider to be outrageous? In my experience, most of the local musicians charge $250 - $300 / gig, at a minimum.

We hired multiple musicans for our wedding events.

    Joel Katz, steele guitar, http://joelkatzmaui.com/
    Ricardo Dioso, classical guitar, http://www.ricardodioso.com/
Manutea Nui E, Tahitian drumming trio, http://www.manuteanuie.com/

All of them were technically excellent musicians and really enhanced our experience. I would hire any of them again in a heartbeat. They're also all a little different from the typical Hawaiian ukelele performance.

If you provide more specifics, I might be able to provide more help. We looked at a ton of musicians and I have a lot of the URLs on file.
  • We are using Ernest Puaa www.dabarefootwarrior.com .  He is going to be our minister and he also plays music.  Music is his main gig.  He is not a quick email responder but several other brides of assured me he is on point wedding day.

  • We just hired a phenomenal DJ who played our ceremony music in addition to everything else.  It wasn't a live instrument, but I don't think it made a big difference and enabled us to have really different styles of music for the recessional & processional.  DJ Dan Viola is awesome!

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Our wedding planner had given us recommendations that would have been about $500 for an hour and that seemed outrageous. I just sent an email to Ernest since I had heard about him from a few different posts on here as well!

We are still looking for music for our outdoor reception if anyone has any further suggestions! There will be about 25 people at our reception and probably looking for music for 4-5 hours.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!
  • You should try looking at craigslist, too. I know some brides went that route and it was cheaper.
  • We used Marvin Tevaga for ceremony, cocktail hour and reception - he was amazing.  Here's a review I wrote for him right after we came back from Maui - http://local.weddingchannel.com/Wedding-Vendors/Marvin-Tevaga-Profile?ProfileId=405996

Another suggestion is Josh Kahula - we were going to book him because Marvin was originally not available on our date.  We went to see Josh and his band play live on our last day in Maui, and he is so talented as well.  He is also able to do both ceremony and reception.
