Calling all foodies...

Help me with my menu!   I can't figure out what to serve for dinner.  We're planning to have a duo -- steak and fish on the same plate (but separated on the plates).  Here's what I'm thinking:

NY steak or filet with gremolata, paired with grilled asparagus
Miso marinated walu (butterfish), paired with jasmine rice

The thing is -- I feel like the 2 parts don't really pair together.  I could do a Hawaiian style braised short rib to seem more "Pacificky" but that kind of becomes a mess of meat with no shape.  And I don't like mahi & other dry fishes for large groups because they are always overdone.

Suggestions?

For reference, we will also serve:

Salad - Spinach salad with strawberries, hearts of palm, walnuts and poppy seed
dressing

Dessert - Duo with lilikoi creme brulee and chocolate puff pastry (and then cake)

I see what you're saying, as beef and fish are totally different to the palate.  But, I feel like since you are pairing each with a side to compliment it (asparagus & rice) that it helps the transition between the 2 dishes.

    Your desert sounds soooooo good!

Sorry, I can't help with this one since I don't eat meat.  But, I will throw this out to you, do you have a vegetarian option? Do you need one?

Kimmy - good point.  The caterer does have a vegetarian option, but we don't have any vegetarian guests as of now.  A few friends that are bringing random dates will let us know once they figure out who the date is :D

FWIW, our guests raved about the short rib we served - what it lacks in shape, it more than makes up for it in flavour and moistness. It and the wedding cake are the two things people are still talking about!

Could you do the steak with a soy-ginger-butter? Some kind of lemongrass gremolata?

I am either going to need an invited or a plate delivered to me...yummy. Butter fish and jasmine rice love it and the steak is a bonus.

Wow, *yum* is all I can say!!  I don't have any advice, since I'm not a foodie at all.  It all sounds GRAND!  I say go for the current duo you're thinking of...  (sorry this doesn't help much, I don't have a picky palate, as you can tell!)  :)

Sorry, I am of no help either, but can I come to your wedding too?  The food sounds divine...I wouldn't care if it "matched" or not...short-ribs might be a good choice, depending on how it is prepared.  If it's really tender, I think it could be a good substitute for the steak.

Ooh, I don't have a picture - the fish, the paella and the snap peas, yes. The beef no.

I'm not going to lie, I went out for dinner last night and had the short ribs (it's been a while) and it's totally reconfirmed my love for that cut. It's really hard to screw it up. It's just so melt-in-the-mouth tender.
