Wedding Themes

How did everyone figure out what their "theme" is? I have looked at so many bridal magazines and still can't really figure out what mine is...I know that I want black bridesmaid dresses and use the blue/purple hydrangea flowers. (getting married labor day weekend 2010) My reception is at Smith Brothers and I would like to play off the modern look of the place, but really don't know how to narrow it down!

Our theme is vintage because both my ring and dress have vintage looking elements.  That said I don't think a theme is necessary at all.  Sometimes people take the theme thing way too far and it gets over the top.  If you want everything to look modern, then run with that as your "theme".

I wanted to do butterflies but my fiance said it's too girly and not unique. So we agreed on Swans, swans are also a running joke in my house.

You don't necessarily have to have a theme, especially if you're having difficulty picking something. I'm guessing you're looking for a "theme" to create a cohesive look for your wedding, and if that's the case, all you need to do is pick an element of some sort and stick with it. Your colors could do that for you easily, you mentioned you want a modern look, I'd suggest finding a particular modern looking something (seriously, anything) that you enjoy and take a closer look at it, decide what it is that you really like with and then try to use that element through out your wedding. You could even look at something that's at your venue and use it in other places like your invites, programs, or menu cards, anything. We chose our monogram and stripes to use through out our wedding and I think it really helped create a contemporary look I was hoping for. We also tried to use only our wedding colors when ever possible. If you're looking for more ideas, I'd suggest checking out weddingbee.com if you haven't already. A while back there was a bride who's into writing and used vintage type writer keys and type writer fonts through out their wedding, and it looked great. There was another bride who used a chandelier image on most of her stuff and it had a very damask look to it, but was still fairly unique since very few people were using chandeliers (I think it may have tied into an actual chandelier at her venue, but I'm not sure).Hope you find some good suggestions, best of luck!

We didn't have a "theme", but we had a garden wedding and everything was shades of green and brown. I guess you could say "earthy", if that is a theme.

Um.... theme? Alcohol!! JK. We didn't do a theme, just went with a contemporary look with our colors. You don't necessarily need a theme unless you want one and know how to do it correctly. You just need to pick a style (modern, classic, vintage, etc.) and then incorporate your colors into it. Your vendors should be able to help you with the rest as long as they know the style and color.BTW You need to be careful with themes because if they aren't done right (or overdone) they can look tacky. Some weddings have pulled them off beautifully and others definitely have not. If you take the time, you can do it right, but style and color will go a long way.

Our theme was "Columbus". I am insanely in love with this city, so we based everything off of that. All of my tables were named after my favorite spots in the city (The Miranova, Union Station Arch, etc), and I had a beautiful pic of the spot on each table. Our ceremony was on a rooftop of a hotel that overlooked the skyline, and it was really breathtaking. I think a theme should be as simple as something you love, or something that catches your eye. Colors or flowers are great themes in my opinion, as long as it is something that looks good to you! GL!

We're considering a 'mexican' theme, somewhat because we love mexican food and we found some great decorations that would fit such inspiration. We are having lots of color, color, color! I almost went with an Italian theme because our family is Italian, but we felt the Mexican inspiration fit better with our venue.I would just suggest looking around at wedding blogs for real wedding inspiration. You may find some real weddings that have venues that look similar to yours, which is a good way to visualize what you want before the wedding. Its how I get all my inspiration. Good luck :)

We're having two themes, of sorts. Our colors are Tiffany blue and pewter/gunmetal gray, so we are incorporating those into attire, linens, and stationary. We are also trying to "marry" our two styles- I'm more modern, fashion-forward and he's more traditional (but he has a modern dress style)- so our decor, flowers, and attire will have a combination of the styles, as long as it's cohesive.
