Special legal requirements??

Hi fellow knotties!
I was wondering if anyone could help me out as I'm finding government websites to be super annoying and hard to navigate! My FI and I are getting married this August on Maui, he is Australian and I am Canadian. We have always known we would get married in Hawaii because it is half way between both countries and therefore a perfect neutral ground!

My FI has his permanent residency here in Canada and that is where we currently live and plan to live (at least for awhile) following our wedding. I'm trying to find out if there is any paperwork or extra documents that we must have to make our wedding legal or if it is better to have a quick "city hall" ceremony here first? I just don't want to be limited in where we live in the future and since we are citizens of different countries, neither of which are US, I was hoping someone might have some insight for me??

Thanks so much!

  • I'm a Canadian, and we got married in Hawaii.  You need $60 US and you both need to fill out the application and sign it at the Dept. of Health to get a certificate.   That's it.  You can do it online now, and go in to sign.  It's good I think for about 3 months after the signing date.

Your wedding license shouldn't have any impact on where you live in the future.  It just states you got married.  Provincial governments don't care where you got married, so long as you have a certificate to prove it was done legally.  Our took about 4 months to arrive back here in the mail by the way, though we could access it online before then too.
