Make up and Hair for Asian's?

Hi All,
Wondering if any of you have recommendations for a good hair and make up artist or each for myself, bridesmaids, and mom. I'm sure they don't have to specialize in Asian skin/hair, but if anyone has any good recommendations for Oahu that would be great.

I have the option of getting ready at the JW Marriott Ihilani as that is where we will be getting married, but the prices seem really steep. Any opinions on their salon and expertise there as well?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Re: Make up and Hair for Asian's?

  • Honestly, based on the wedding blogs I've seen, many of the people who get married in HI are Asian. I wouldn't ask who's good for Asians, I would just ask who's good on that island. (I only have Maui opinions or I would share.) You'll be able to see their portfolio and decide for yourself if they've done a good job with Asian hair in the past. Keep in mind, of course, that the artist is responding to the bride's wishes. So, even if it's not what you would do, it's what the bride asked for.
  • I completely agree with pikakegirl.... Most of the weddings that happen on Oahu are Asian couples. I don't have any specific recommendations on this island but I can assure you that all hair stylists here have worked with Asian hair. I would say it would probably be more cost effective to go to a salon or have someone else come to you rather than using the hotel services- those tend to have a high markup. Good luck!

I used Gemina (Faith & Beauty) for me, mom and bridesmaids (we're Asian), and she's great!  I had her come to me at Ihilani.  To me, it was better to hang out in our room with all the girls and get those getting ready shots.
  • Hello! Try this blog site: http://www.frmheadtotoe.com/2012/01/everyday-monolid-makeup-tutorial.html for make-up inspiration/tutorials you can show your make-up artist. Not a lot of make-up artists know how to do eye makeup on asian eyes, it's usually too much eyeshadow, liner, etc. It's best to come with photos for examples. Hope this helps!

    I'm Asian :)
  • Excellent! Thanks so much for all your advice. I will definitely look into the individuals that have been mentioned. It is a bit overwhelming for me to even know what I want in terms of makeup and hair, cause I really am very low maintenance and always have the same hair, and have very little makeup experience. But of course on the big day I want to look a little bit more glamorous but of course not too overdone that I don't look like myself.

Did most of you guys get hair and makeup trials before the wedding?
