Hawaii

destination bride thoughts

So we arrived in Hawaii yesterday and I've already learned a few things I want to share with other destination wedding brides (especially if you've never been here). First of all... Hawaii is as beautiful as everyone says... As all the pictures and movies you've ever seen.. It's just gorgeous.
Okay... now on to the lessons I learned. I sat outside around 4 pm just to see how the weather would be if we had an outdoor wedding around this time. OMG it is hot! I live in Nevada desert so remember... I can withstand 105 degree weather without any problems. I consider 75 to be cool weather and 85 to be comfortable. Well in Hawaii... 79 degrees with tropical sun AND humidity basically feels like 100 degrees out. I was definitely not used to that heat. Sweating walking from car to restaurant. Things I've reconsidered since I've been here that other destination brides planning a wedding might want to know! (I'm sure a lot of you already know... but just some things I never even thought about.)
1) I haven't bought a dress yet but fell in love with Maggie Sottero Sabelle. The material is so thick I want to look for a lighter material dress so I'm not all sweaty!
2) I've seen pictures of groom and groomsmen in tan suits which I absolutely love. We might just go with khakis a shirt and tie bc the groomsmen are all from Chicago and wouldn't be able to take the heat with all those layers.
3) The 4 pm sun is still scorching hot. The outdoor ceremony will have to be short and sweet.
4) I originally wanted bamboo dining canopies but may have to switch to a tent for sun and heat protection for the guests.

In conclusion... Hawaii is gorgeous and HOT!!!

Thanks for the tips! It's very helpful for us future Hawaii brides. When I was considering having a 3:30 or 4:30 ceremony, my wedding coordinator really advised that I pick the later time because the 3:30 heat may make our guests uncomfortable. We are also getting a white tent (instead of clear) to a) provide privacy b) for our plan b in case it rains c) to protect from the sun.

Yikes our wedding is going to be at 4pm in august , i can only imagine how sweaty im gonna be, my dress is heavy! Also our house we're renting for the ceremony & reception doesn't have any AC! Eek, ive ordered paper fans...hopefully it won't be too unbearable.

I've actually got a question-- how much does the wind make a difference in temperature when near the water? Hopefully that will help with those of us having beach ceremonies :)

Thanks!  Good to know.  I'm not going to stress about it.  I'm always cold so I'm looking forward to the heat.  Heck, I'm looking forward to Everything there!!

Wind makes a HUGE difference. We had a 4:30 ceremony, the wind was up and it wasn't too bad.

Picking a lightweight material is really key! My dress was made from raw silk, and that made a huge difference.

I agree with Alyson. The breeze off the ocean makes a HUGE difference. We had a 4:30 wedding. I was in a lace dress (pretty light), and our guys were in suits. We all did fine. I wasn't sweating at all, and I don't remember ever thinking I was hot.

Thanks for the heads up on the weather this time of year. I'm just starting my dress search and I think one of my picks may have to go by the wayside as it is a bit on the heavier side and I get sticky in the heat easily. I've been told that silk breathes well, but any thoughts on whether sweating in the dress would be obvious or ruin the dress??

    HappyGoLuckyGal,

Every time I see your pictures I can't get over how absolutely stunning you are. Your wedding looked incredibly beautiful.

It wasn't noticeable on my dress (and I did get sweaty during the dancing). I don't know why that was though - whether it was the silk or the fact that it was raw silk (so textural).

So we went up to North Shore yesterday and there was a significant breeze and cooler even with the hot tropical sun. So it didnt feel as sticky. This was around 2 pm. We went to Honolulu around 4 and it was hot and sticky. But the other brides were right... If you are right by the ocean you get a breeze and it's not bad at all!

I got married at 4pm in a taffeta dress in August, and it all turned out fine.  I was worried about the heat/humidity, as well, but once we got down to the beach where our ceremony took place, the breeze really kept us cooled down.  When we weren't on the beach, though, it did feel super hot.

What about a late morning wedding? We were thinking like 11am? Is it super hot?

We'll, it's still Hawai'i, so yes, 11 am is hot. It's only a degree or so cooler than 4 pm.
