Name Change Process??

Ok so the HM is over and I no longer need to keep my maiden name.... (if we could have changed it earlier that would have been great... stupid passport)

So do I go to the SS office first... Or the DMV..... I've heard different people say different things.....  (waiting until after the 1st of the year so lines wont be so crazy with people wanting their SS chechs....)

You need to get the stupid thing from marriage office first. The paper that costs $2 to get a copy of- Marriage certificate or license. I lucked out, went to social security office and they processed my new ss card without the paper. But I was told later by a friend need that $2 form to prove marriage at DMV. DMV will need original copy of marriage license, proof of current address (if different from current drivers license), and costs $25 for new license. waiting for the marriage certificate took me 6 weeks after requesting it online. GL!

can either request marriage license online or go downtown. I thought ordering online and having it mailed to my house would be easier then paying to park downtown...boy was I wrong. Do not go that route!

You have to get the certified copy of your marriage certificate from the marriage license office. Take that to the Social Security office. There won't be a line because of checks. They do those all by direct deposit now. You can take the paper from the Social Security office to the DMV, you will have to pay for a repacement license though. Your credit cards may want a copy of the certified marriage license, and if you get Child support, they will want a copy too, but you only need to buy one certified copy, the rest can be photocopies of that.
