Help!! Wedding Dress Redesign

Call me old fashioned, but I am totally into tradition and wearing my mom's dress. She happened to be as big as my right arm and a foot shorter than me when she got married. So obviously that dress was out of the question. My aunt gave me her dress and it fit me perfectly. Only problem is I can not find any places that actually do wedding dress redesign in Ohio. I can find places that do alterations and a few minor changes here and there, but no major designs. Just like any bride, I want my dress to be perfect on my big day, but am I just missing the good places or what? I have tried every search possible on google and can't find any places. Please help, suggestions welcome!!

Re: Help!! Wedding Dress Redesign

  • So you want to wear a dress from your mom/aunt/someone else in your life but want to completely redo it? Basically, you just want to use the fabric from the dress? If that's the case, it probably won't work. They cut the fabric to be certain sizes and those pieces of the pattern don't exactly fit well into other parts of the dress to allow it to be used elsewhere (ex: sleeve material used to make the skirt). If you don't like the design of the dress so much you're going to have it completely re-sewn, forgo that and buy a new dress that's exactly what you want. You can have a hankie made out of your mom's dress or something to carry with you on the day of.

  • I agree with PP. If you want to completely redesign the whole dress, you're going to have a hell of a time because of how fabric goes together. You might not be able to find any places because it might not be a legit possiblity. It also might turn into a project so large that you would have been better off buying a new dress. I looked into remaking a vintage dress so that it fit me (so many of them have 22" waists and slim sholders) and a place I found here in Chicago that did it would run over $3000 for such dramatic changes (subtract about 25% for the average Chicago to Columbus price difference).

  • I know it sounds terrible, but try craigslist. A lot of ladies do this out of their home, and most have a album of their work. Plus since theres no middle man, its usually way cheaper! worth a shot!

  • Ok, so I guess I made it sound like I wanted to change the dress entirely. My main goal is to make the long sleeves short and open the neck line from a collar to a vneck. I sounded a bit dramatic in my first post lol. I think you girls are right and with what I'm wanting I may as well buy a new dress for the price I'd pay for alterations. Thanks for suggesitng making something else out of the dress. I may have to use that idea!
  • My friend took her moms dress and had it made into a veil, with the lace running along the edges. Super pretty and from what I understood it wasn't to pricey!
  • There are very few in Columbus who do redesigns... and do them well. It is possible though! Talk to places who deal with restoring dresses all the time like high quality dry cleaners. If you need a name though... Monica Gwaltney is the one to know and have. She's been sewing for over 40 years and can help you to redesign a vintage dress to what you want with none of the problems everyone else has mentioned.

    Good Luck!
    Enjoy the process!
