Petit Fours instead of wedding cake?

Has anyone served Petit Fours instead of cake?  Any good tips or prices in the area?  We would still do a mock cake with a real top for the bride and groom cake-cutting at the reception, but I'm wondering how to go about ordering the Petit Fours without breaking the bank.

I don't know... I think I would miss the cake if I went to a wedding and there wasn't one.

If you're worried about price... this is what my MOH's sister did for her wedding this past summer.  They made a "fake cake" that had one layer that the bride & groom cut... and then they took the cake to the back to "cut."  For everyone else, they just ordered sheet cakes that were already cut.  Didn't tell the bakery they were for a wedding... just ordered I think 4 sheet cakes.  It was WAY less expensive.

I'm with RA- I did that for my first wedding. We got sheet cakes from Costco. I think it cost us a total of $40. The cake itself was made out of foam core board, duct tape, caulk, and 5 lbs of buttercream icing. No one was the wiser. Most of the WP thought it was real!

I think Petit Fours are a good idea, but depending on the baker, this may end up xosting more that sheet cakes. The baker may charge more for the intricate work of decorating the petit fours depsning on how many you may need. I personally am doing sheet cakes. I cant fathom spending a whole lot of cash for something that only has a cameo appearance for short period of time before you slice into it. Check around, and see if maybe Costco, Sams, or BJ's may do petit fours along with their other items. Good Luck
