Columbus Renaissance Ballroom! SO HIDEOUS! HELP!

We live out of town and booked the renaissance sight unseen because we had attended a wedding there on the rooftop, and loved the outdoor expeirnce, etc, etc.
Anyways, we visited over the holidays while we were home, and the ballroom. OMG it's hideous.
Any similar experiences? Anyone cancel the reception without losing their deposit? Or any brides actually overcome that horrible decor?

  • Oh No!!!! That's terrible!!!!  What is it that makes this venue so hidious??? Do you have any pictures of it??

  • I'm sorry to hear that you're unhappy with your venue.

What don't you like about the decor? Can you afford to hire a decorator to help with ideas? That might be less expensive than losing your deposit depending on how much you've paid. Vendors are usually not very flexible about refunding deposits unless they are able to rebook your date.

    Good luck!

  • I cancel my wedding at the atheneum and lost my deposit but I am so much happier and I am still saving around 6-7 thousand even with loosing the deposit!
  • I agree it might be worth loosing the deposit if it isn't too much. On the other hand, I've never seen the place before either....but I looked at some pictures on their website and I didn't think it looked bad. First....did you see it all lighted up?....because event lighting tends to forgive more than bright lighting...imo. Also, is it the carpet/drapes that bother you? That is the only thing I could see by the pictures might be difficult to work with if it didn't go with your color scheme. So what about doing some draping and uplighting to distract from that if that is what you don't like....I don't know how much that costs though so it might not be worth it...but a thought.

I think no matter what once you get all the people in the room, your table linens, place settings, etc.....I think it will look great. It's like those house hunting shows....the rooms look ten times better with all the furniture and accessories than when they are empty.

Oh and what about asking the site if they will give you contact info of previous brides...you might be able to ask them to see pictures of the ballroom decorated with their decor to see if you hate it even all dolled up. Imo it doesn't matter if you do the reception at a 500 dollar place or 10k place because I think it is all in the details.

So, if you are worried about photos... I know alot of the photos I ended up liking of my friends weddings are the preceremony and ceremony (which sounds like you won't have a problem here). I also liked detail shots of the reception (like cake, centerpieces, etc)....of course I like the reception photos but the ones I like are typically of the people dancing, doing funny stuff, etc....Not the ones of overall look....bc there is too many things going on in those type of pics. Something you might consider if you are worrying about that too and you like that type of stuff in photography....Anyway, good luck!
  • You should contact Brian Ford at 614.477.3692. He has done lots of wedding decor in that space AND on the roof. He is a friend of mine. His pricing is very reasonable too!
  • I'm curious to know what you don't like about it. That is one of the locations FI and I will be looking at in a couple of weeks when we are up there....
  • OK my first advice is not to panic.

Most hotel ballrooms are NOT too beautiful to beging with.  They are used for mostly bland / boring business meetings - not beautiful weddings.  You can make your reception completely beautiful, but it might require some work.

Flowers and centerpieces can do WONDERS in a room!  They create great focal points instead of the hotel walls.

While it can be expensive (so I'm told) you can get some nice drape - maybe only behind the head table??  Or maybe some swags in the ceiling?

Finally you can get some lighting.  Check out this site (one of my vendors) that I used for decor lighting!

Bottom line:  You can make this work!!  I have no doubt about it!!  GOOD LUCK!!

I don't know the running prices for draping...but are Brian Ford's draping prices reasonable? I'm having my reception at The Vault and there are a couple things I feel needs to be done to jazz parts up, but I'm awful at being creative!
  • listen to these ladies. LIGHTING DOES WONDERS. you can transform an entire space with colored spot lights. i hope you're able to recover!
