Capitol Room

Has anyone rented the Capitol Room for a reception?  What was your experience and would you recommend it?

I didn't use it for my wedding, however my sorority held out formal there last fall. It was really nice- you can bring in your own caterer, they have a fountain soda machine, it's pretty (with chandeliers), etc. I think it's pretty reasonably priced also. I'd definitely look into it!

I also looked into it, and they had a lot of rules that you have to follow.  Also, one caterer I spoke with about the Capital Room said that the area they have for the caterers to use is not very big, and the set up makes it very hard for them to work.  I also heard that from another bride, as in a diff caterer said the same thing to her.  I also seem to remember that you had to be done fairly early in the evening, and the dance floor is VERY small. I did like the soda fountain, but other than that, I was not impressed.  They only have one bar too, and they won't set another one up.

We just rented it for our reception in March. It was the most reasonably priced place that you didn't have to everything yourself. (They handle tables, chairs, linens, bartender, pop.) Depending on your time of year, there is a coupon available at the bridal fair this weekend for additional money off the price.

I just read the post about the rules. I know for us Dee was really helpful. She let us change several things in the contract such as having the venue all day (and the night before if available); you just have to be out by midnight. The dance floor is small. That was a drawback, but the price was too good to pass up ($1500 with coupon - all tables, chairs, linens, bartenter and non-alcoholic drinks included.) Being budget-conscious we are catering with Hickory Park so our meals are only $5.50/person. Since we are not doing plated dinners, I'm not as concerned about the size of the catering space. They have 2 bartenders but the space may be small so we'll see how that goes.

We had our reception for our wedding there in August.  Dee is wonderful to work with!  The dance floor is small, but we didn't seem to have any problems with it!  Dee can also do catering for you at HyVee and they do a really good job!  I would definitely recommend it!!!!!!
