NWR - Thanksgiving Favorites

This year we will be hosting Thanksgiving, so I'm trying to think of what to serve. The main things at our traditional dinners are of course the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravey, corn, dinner rolls, and pumpkin pie. What are some of your favorites at Thanksgiving? I'm trying to put our own twist on it this year! TIA!

Green bean casserole :) I think its the canned (french style?) green beans...cream of mushroom? (maybe lol I've never made it my self) and the crunchy onion things on top.

Wow what an explaination  there!  I am a chef I tell ya!

I actually haven't made the entire dinner before, but one of my favorites to bring is apple snicker salad- love it!  Some people say it is easier to have cold snickers to cut up, but that isn't true. Much easier to cut them up at room temperature. Here is the link to the kind I make. There are other types (add bananas, add only cool wHip and not the pudding) but I don't think those are nearly as tasty as this.

I love that gelled cranberry sauce! Awesome stuff! I am sure it is horrible for you but who cares - it's thanksgiving :).

I make an asparagus/green bean side that a lot of people really enjoy and I never have leftovers of...

blanch 1 pound of asparagus or green beans, ends trimmed
saute in a large pan with a couple tbsp butter and a couple tbsp olive oil, and a big splash of fresh lemon juice, and handfull of sea salt (you might need to do this in 2 batches, depending on the size of your pan)
When the butter is melted and everything his hot and fragrant, zest the lemon and sprinkle on top

Cubed roasted squash, root veggies, and onions are good, too.  Ina Garten has a really good recipe for it on food network (dot) com.

My favorite side dish is still my mom's mashed potatoes with dark brown gravy.  It's the only kind of gravy I can eat, since light colored gravies squick me out.

Every year, I contribute two things to Thanksgiving dinner that people always rave about -- chipotle mashed sweet potatoes and pumpkin cheesecake.

Both are actually super easy. For the sweet potatoes, I just boil them, mash them, and add large amounts of brown sugar and canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. If you're not a huge fan of spicy food, you can just add a small amount of the peppers and it just gives it a smoky kick of flavor -  I, however, like to make it pretty damn spicy.

For the pumpkin cheesecake, I always just buy tubs of pumpkin cream cheese from Bruegger's Bagels and use my standard cheesecake recipe with them.

    ahhh....I love everything listed above!

We always have lefse and then apple salad.

The apple salad consists of 5 to 6 apples, two cups heavy whipping cream (whipped until there are peaks) and then add sugar to taste along and mix with the apples. So easy and delicious!

Maybe, can you please save me a slice of the cheesecake?  That sounds really, really good right now.  I sure wish I had a reason to make a whole cheesecake, but if I did, it'd just go to waste since FI wouldn't touch it.

Haha. I totally stole the concept from an episode of his show "Good Eats" like  three years ago. I never got his official recipe, but it's one of those things you don't really need specific measurements for.

I'm also a fan of the green bean casserole, but I like to doctor it up with fresh shredded romano (or parmesan or asiago), and sprinkle that on top along with the French fried onions. I also throw some crumbled bacon in there, because bacon makes just about anything better. :)
