Best place for unique type cakes?

I really want to do a surprise cool grooms cake that incorporates my FI's favorite things like the Twins/Cantabury/DMB/our doggie.  I'm a fan of the the cake shows like Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes etc.

I see a lot of posts for Buttercream or Queen of Cakes, would these two places be the best for the kind of cake I'm looking for?  TIA!

Not sure about your budget, but when I think of amazing cakes in MN like what you are mentioning, I think of Gateaux:

We're getting out cake from Gateaux, Inc. and we couldn't be more thrilled. Their cake designs are AMAZING. We're getting both our wedding cake and our groom's cake from Gateaux.

Not only are their cakes AMAZING looking, but they're the best tasting cakes I've ever had. And Robin and her staff are so wonderful to work with. The creative process was fun and easy (especially since FI and I aren't creative...at all).

Just to give you an idea on price, our wedding cake will feed approx. 120 and cost $1550. Our groom's cake will feed approx. 40 and cost $650 and is quite elaborate.

Good luck! Let us know who you select!

I would recomend Penny Steele Custom Cakes. Here is her website:

It is the best cake I have ever eaten and I have seen a dog cake that she did that was super cute! I really want one of our dog too!

Queen of Cakes can make some really amazing unique cakes at a more affordable price than Gateaux.  They made a porsche cake for Knottie anitalynn which was super cute!

Buttercream is pretty strict on colors they will use for frosting (only natural colors like pink from strawberries, brown from chocolate, etc.), and I'm not sure about shapes either.  Buttercream will not use fondant either.

I second Queen of Cakes on a cheaper budget. They are doing a Transformer themed cake for under $250. Their cakes taste awesome too. They sent extra cake home from our tasting so other family members could enjoy! Awesome customer service!

Thanks for the info ladies, Gateaux's cakes look pretty cool and prob. the closest to the types of cakes I am talking about, however, those prices are little out of range for me.  I think I'll probably go to Queen of Cakes and see what they can do.

I'm also thinking of maybe not even having another actual wedding cake and just doing the grooms cake and then sheet cakes for the guests.  Idk, a wedding cake isn't all that important to me but I love the kind of grooms cake I'm talking about, and better yet it will be a surprise for the FI!

I second Penny Steele.  Her son is one of FI's friends and he does most of their "show stopper" cakes and they're awesome.  He made FI a shark cake a few years ago (long story) and it looked so realistic!  They also did all of the animal cakes for the MN Zoo's anniversary party.   They're also delicious!

Side note: they've competed against the guys from Ace of Cakes before!

Check out Jessica's Cakes too...  I was also going to mention Gateaux and QOC but the PP beat me to it...

Buttercream won't do shaped cakes..  One thing to consider is talking to the baker you're already going to be using to do this.  Some bakers because of food manager laws here in MN won't let you bring in cakes from another decorator, so it's just something to be checking on with both the baker for your main cake and if you have a different baker do the groom's cake...  We had this with both our bakers and neither wanted the full order we were making so agreed to wave their restrictions, but it's something to cover thy buns on!!!

Thanks for the tips ladies, especially the one about the two bakers.  There's a place in Crystal, called The Cake Box, that FI's family have been going to for years and I loved it when I finally got to try it!  So I was thinking of using them for the sheet cakes, they are more old school so guessing they may not even want to do the unique grooms cake.  I will have to find out though.  Thanks again!
