Maybe I'm slow?

We're thinking about doing the sand ceremony thing but neither of us fully understands why they give you a third vase? I've been searching the internet but haven't found a solid explanation. Can someone help clarify this? We each have a vile for sand that represents us/our current lives and then the giant middle vase that we pour in together to symbolize our lives becoming one but why is there a third color?? =/ I feel stupid.

Is it maybe for a child?  I have a seven-year old and had considered doing the sand ceremony as a family.  In that case, we would need three colors.

That's what I was maybe thinking but I've read other sites that say you're supposed to like have the groom mix his with the third vile and then you mix yours and put the combined vile into the large container afterwards so I'm not 100% sure

Were having one vase for me, one for FI, and we're pouring them into one larger vase.. I've never seen it done any other way.

I've seen it represent God/Faith when the sand is white and that is poured in first as your "foundation" and I saw it at another wedding poured in by the moms representing your families being the base and beginning of your relationship.  In both cases you then pour yours and your future husbands in alternating on top.
