I can't believe they did that. There's nothing wrong with donating.

Re: Sad, but WR.

  • I saw this on the news last night, how disgusting that they ruined perfectly good gowns and bridesmaid dresses!
  • One might argue that the daily purchase of dresses that cost thousands of dollars (not to even mention the lavish celebrations brides wear them to) is exponentally more wasteful than this single event of not-donating stuff to 'needy' people.  No one 'needs' a thousand + dollar dress.

I tried to get worked up about their destroying the unsold merchandise, but in the end I really think it was just a business decision.  Taking the loss made more financial sense than taking the deduction for donating to charity.

While I agree that the amount of money spent on the wedding industry each year is ridiculous, I don't think there's any way you can see this as a "good business decision." Technically, no one makes you file charitable donations on your taxes. They could've just given the dresses away and not taken the deduction. True, no one "needs" a thousand dollar dress, but every woman deserves to feel like a princess, to look her best, and to have the day of her dreams on her wedding day. Think of how you would feel if that opportunity were taken from you because of a "business decision."
  • That is really awful! WOW! . Sad!
  • Seriously?  You realize that it was in the contract with the designers that they had to be destroyed, right?  Does anyone actually read before they get all overworked about things?

It's not like people are starving over this.  Stores throw away food and clothing all the time.
  • Wow that is so sad. :(

First, yes we can read, thanks for that. Secondly, those contracts are only in place to keep the high-end market high-end. They're designed to keep certain brands prestigious. It's not as though the designers are losing any money because the dresses have already been purchased by the retailer that went out of business. The women who would have gotten them through charity or thrift stores wouldn't have been able to afford them at full price, so they're not losing money that way either.

And no, people aren't starving over this issue, but I get upset that perfectly good bread and other food products are thrown away at many stores as well; I just didn't bring it up previously because it wasn't relevant to this issue. It's just a problem with wastefulness and with some designers thinking their branding is more important than doing something good for people in need. Because of their contractual obligation, you can't really blame the retailer for destroying the dresses, but you can be upset with the situation as a whole and with the desingers who are choosing to be so selfish.
  • This sucks, makes me wish I had gone to the sale after all. I didn't because me wedding was over a year away. Also by the time I heard about it I figured they would have been cleared out... Looks like they had plenty of stuff left over after all.
