Dance Lessons??

Do you ladies have any recommendation for where to go for dance lessons?  We want to take dance lessons for our first dance.  Thanks :)

Re: Dance Lessons??

  • We're going to be using Cinema Ballroom in St. Paul.  They offer wedding packages for indiviidual lessons and group lessons are included.

  • We went to Arthur Murray in Edina and LOVED every minute of our lessons. We actually have been going back every now and then for a lesson! They are fun!

  • Hands down: Ballroom Dance Studio in South Minneapolis.  http://myballroomdancestudio.com/

I did a bunch of research prior to choosing a place and not only was Tom, the owner, the most friendly and prompt at returning my calls/emails but he was also the most reasonably priced.  We finished our 4th private lesson this past Tuesday evening and will go for another few, partly because we want to perfect our dance but mostly because we're having so much fun!  He's choreographed our whole dance and he's such a nice and fun guy!

One other thing I noticed is that some other dance studios offer "private lessons" but there are other instructors in the room teaching others...not at Ballroom Dance Studio.  You get the whole studio to yourself!

I just made an appointment with Tom for our first lesson.  When you guys went, did you bring your ipod with the song or put the song on a CD?  Thanks :)
  • Great to hear, ladies!  We chose to put our song on a cd to leave with Tom as he told us he'll listen to the song to get down the choreography outside of the lesson.  Also you don't have to worry about remembering it each lesson.  Oh, I also recommend bringing a camera with video option as you can film what you've learned at the end of each lesson.  This really helps when you practice.

I have to ask - what's your song?  :)  Our theme is old Hollywood glamour and one of our fav movies is Top Hat (with Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers and features "Cheek to Cheek") so we chose the more upbeat Sinatra version of "Cheek to Cheek."  We've had so much fun and it's a nice workout.  This past lesson (our 4th) Tom had us put most of the small segments we'd already learned all together with the whole song.  It was so cool to see it all and how pretty it'll be!

Can't wait to hear what you think!  I'd also like to hear what you're planning on wearing for shoes during the dance.  I'm thinking of purchasing some ballroom dance shoes.

  • Camera with video option is a good idea except I don't think I have anything :/  I love Sinatra's songs, but my fiancee doesn't want big band songs so we're probably going to go with something else...not sure what yet.
Tom told me to bring shoes that are similar to the ones I'll be wearing to the lessons.  I'm kind of nervous about dancing in heels since I don't wear them very often and the ones I bought for the wedding don't have straps to keep them from flying away :)   I guess I didn't think about this when I purchased the shoes.  I'll probably show Tom my shoes and see what he can choreograph so my shoes don't slip off :)  Are you wearing heels at the lessons?
I will let you know after our first lesson in mid Feb.
  • I just wanted to add a little piece of advice-- make sure that you can easily move and dance in your dress. We were going to do a waltz for our first dance and ended up not being able to because my dress woudln't allow it.
