Cake vendors???

I posted about cake probably 5-6 months ago and we went to Queen of Cakes in Edina for a tasting but FI and I realized that we need to bring someone to our tasting that actually likes cake. So where are you getting your cake from? We are going to have a tasting at Buttercream this week. TIA!

We had tastings at Buttercream, Dorothy Ann, and Grandma's Bakery.

Although we loved the service at Buttercream, we chose Grandma's because their cake was delicious and close to our venue.

We tasted at Roseville, PJ Murphy's, Key's and Queen of Cakes.  I have full reviews on each of the cakes from a few days ago.  In the end it looks like we will go with either Roseville or Key's.

We went to a ton of different places and ended up booking with Penny Steele Custom Cakes because her cake tasted AMAZING! We are only have cake for Joe and I and the WP so it had to taste good. I would highly recommend going for a tasting. Here is her website: http://www.steelecustomcakes.com/

We tasted at Buttercream and Queen of Cakes.  We really didn't like the cake at Buttercream.  The white cake tasted "blah" and the chocolate cake was just okay.  My FI doesn't care for sweets, so I didn't expect him to love our wedding cake.  However, when he tried the cake at Queen of Cakes, he finished his entire plateful!  Queen of Cakes sent extra cake home with us, so my mom, dad, and brother also tried it.  They LOVED it!  So, we'll probably go with Queen of Cakes   I know you've already tried them, but you could ask for some cake to go and have other family members try it . . .

We're using Gateaux, Inc. for our wedding cake and grooms cake. 

When my brother got married, I went with my SIL to Buttercream - delicious cake! In fact, I ended up eating her chocolate slice, too. Oops But we decided to go with Gateaux because Buttercream wasn't able to do the artistic stuff we wanted (b/c they don't do fondant). 

I think Buttercream is delicious and very well priced, but if you're looking for something more artistic, I'd say look at Gateaux. Robin and her team are amazing; I can't emphasize it enough!

We tasted at The Cake Box in Crystal, the Profile Event Center caterer, and Queen of Cakes in Edina.  Queen of Cakes was by far the best cake - we wanted lemon cake, which the Cake Box didn't even offer, and it was also the most reasonably priced.  Terri was fabulous to work with, too!

Here's where we tasted and what we thought:

Buttercream: Meh. The cakes were good, but I like really buttery, not as sweet frosting, and theirs tasted almost like ice cream to me. Also a bit more than $2/slice, I think.

Dorothy Anns Bakery, Woodbury: Yuck. Sorry, but we all thought it. The cake was dry, the frosting super sugary. Some pretty designs, though. It was definitely in the right price range.

Queen of Cakes: Delicious cake, moist and heavy. Lots of cake and frosting options and beautiful designs. A bit pricey.

Keys Cafe, White Bear Lake: We all thought every cake and frosting we tried here was incredible. They don't do some of the really fancy fondant work that places like Queen of Cakes does, but they've got them beat on price and taste. Per-slice is in your range, too! The woman in White Bear Lake is Celia or Cecilia or something. We decided to go with Keys. If you check them out, tell her Debbie sent ya.

McHattie's Victorian Tea House, Woodbury: OMG, great cake. We only tried the pumpkin cake because she only does one flavor at the tasting, but she bakes a whole small cake and lets you take it home -- all free -- which is crazy but awesome. The filling was like a candy bar - SO good. And the cake itself was like 20 lbs. Unfortunately, cost per slice is upwards of $5-$7. Yikes!

We tried Roseville Bakery, Denny's 5th Street Bakery, A Piece of Cake, Byerly's, and Penny Steele.  Of those, our favorites were Roseville, Denny's, and A Piece of Cake. 

I think A Piece of Cake was probably my favorite tasting cake (simply divine!!).  The frosting was very light and not overly sugary like a lot of the others out there.  I would have chosen that one in a second, but we're saving about $100 by going with Roseville, which was also very good.

Like cswaldon mentioned, Buttercream isn't able to do anything crazy artistic, because they don't use fondant. (Which is ok with me, cause I hate the taste of fondant.) Also, Buttercream doesn't use artificial dyes, so if you want something pink, they basically just add raspberries to the mixture to make it pink.

I third Penny Steele. The fiance and I had our cake tasting there. He's not a big cake fan at all but really liked their cakes. They also do detailed cakes like some of the higher-priced bakers.
When we had our cake tasting Penny Steele provided 2 different flavors. We loved them both and want those 2 flavors (so far). Penny told me that they are having an open house in April. We are going to go so we can try more flavors. The only problem is that we will probably love multiple flavors and it will make our decision even harder! If you want to give her a try I would recommend attending her open house so you can more flavors. Hope this helps.

We tried some place in St Paul that was not good. 

Then Queen of Cakes - they actually will package you up some cake and send it home with you.  We tried about 8 different combinations and had cake for about 1.5 weeks.   The cake was good.  FI just picked it up on his way home from work one day.

Penny Steele - This is who we booked.  Cake it good.  Only got to try 2 pieces at the booking, but like PP said in April she is having an open house for all the summer weddings to come in and try the cake and pick their flavors.  She uses sheet cakes (they are really tall!) so that helps the cost stay low.

Icing Dreams in St. Cloud (they deliver to the Twin Cities). They totally rock my socks. Their cakes are so moist and delicious - never ever frozen (eeeew). They are skilled with fondant and charge less than $3/slice for fondant cakes (I'm not doing fondant, but it was interesting to hear, especially knowing prices of Twin Cities cakeries).

Seriously, if you have the chance to get to St. Cloud, stop in and see Dana. So so worth it.

I will say Rivertown Cakes was well worth my drive to Hastings to try. I had never heard of them before but I was BLOWN AWAY! We had done a tasting at Queen of Cakes and were kind of bored with the flavor choices (kind of the usual flavors). I was so impressed with Angie's (the owner) work on her website and choice of flavors we had to meet wih her. Her prices are amazing and my goodness the cake...

She tried a Key Lime recipe for us and I could seriously eat it every day and I am not too wild about cake. She only uses butter, no shortening. So good. She delivers within 30 miles for free and then charges per mile. Our reception is in Mpls and it is free delivery.
