Salon Rec for Frugal Bridesmaids

I am in need of a salon in the city of Minneapolis for my bridesmaids that charges less than $65 for updos. A downtown, Loring Park, Seward, or Uptown location would be closest to the venue. They are being frugal and don't want to pay more than $40 or $50 for their updos, so onsite stylists are out of the question, since onsite hair starts at about $70 in the cities. We will probably subsidize some of the cost of their hair and count that as part of their gift, in addition to getting them something monogrammed. It doesn't make sense to send them to my salon, which is on the other side of the metro, and there are a plethora of salons in Mpls. to choose from.

Has anyone been to any of the following salons?  Hairpolice, Jungle Red, Moxie, Juut, Tres Jolie, The Chair, Salon Stella.

  • Julie Swenson Beauty charges $50 for BMs, and that's for on-site or at her Grand Ave studio :-)

She was the cheapest I found for BMs and does great work!

  • I've been to 3 of those: Juut, Tres Jolie, and Salon Stella.

I've also heard Moxie is awesome.

I have not had an updo at any of them, but here is my take on each one:

Juut- feast or famiine. Their downtown Minneapolis location is hugely expensive, so I doubt you could get updos there in your price range. At their new talents salon in Uptown, you probably could get inexpensive updos, done by folks out of beauty school less than a year. I had mixed results there, loved my haircut, but color was so-so. I have a feeling it depends on who you get.

Tres Jolie rocks. I get my hair colored there and they have experienced people who know what they are doing. I would check if they can do updos in your price range. If so, they are worth considering.

Salon Stella. I just had my first haircut there last week, by their most junior stylist, Jon. Nothing special, I probably would not return to him as he seemed too new to hairstyling for me. Their prices are good, though.

Since it's probably not in your budget to get trials, will you and the BMs be very picky about the results? If not, you could probably do fine with Stella or Juut new talents.
  • Do all of your bridesmaids WANT to have their hair done, or is it that you're requiring it? If you're letting them do whatever they want with their hair, they could just find their own stylists, or they can do their own hair. If you're requiring them to have their hair professionally done (perhaps because you want everyone to get ready as a group) then you really should be covering the entire cost of their hair fees.

Thanks, I contacted Julie but she was already booked that day. I ended up picking the Blowdry! Blowdry Bar in Uptown for my bridesmaids' blowouts.
  • Our wedding planner said that covering hair was not necessary or expected, and a couple of my friends were in other weddings where they paid for their own hair. We ended up picking the Blowdry! Blowdry Bar in Minneapolis for their blowouts, as that was one of the only salons that had any availability and was in the bridesmaids' price range.
