Basic DJ service?

Hello gals,

I know there have been many a post about DJs but I am not seeing many recs for a basic dj service.  We don't need any lights, venue has speakers, etc. and don't need/want the dj to say much at all.  No dollar dances, bouquet or garter toss, nothing for the dj to organize.  We'll have set music for most of the evening and maybe the last 2 hours can be requests.  We'll need about 6 hours (including ceremony music) and are trying to keep the cost to $400 or less but I don't know if that is even realistic?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Basic DJ service?

  • If there are already speakers and you don't need anything else you should consider like just hooking up an i-pod with your set music.
  • We thought about that as an option but there are just too many things that can go wrong and we'd lose the possibility of requests.  Plus we'd need to download/purchase 6 hours of music.

  • I have a friend that works for stclouddj.com. They cost more than that but they may be willing to compromise. Doesn't hurt to ask. I've seen Gimli and Coop DJ before at formals so I know for sure they're good (plus they've both been radio DJs as well). I know they just plug their computers in.

  • Here is a correspondence I made with a DJ recently. Ignore all of the answers to the questions I asked him, but note that he charges 350$ all night for whatever you want. HTH:

Most of the weddings I do fall into your category, the couple in their late 20's early 30's.  They like a lot of top 40 along with some of their favorites from rock and R&B.  I usually give you a music list that you can go through and highlight songs you would like to hear.  If you don't see something you would like just write it down and I will download it so I have if available that night.  I let you decide the type of music you want to hear on your night.  Sometimes it changes as the night progresses and I'm pretty flexible as far as that goes and if there is a request that night that I don't have I have the ability to download it on the spot (usually about 10 minutes later) so we can keep the night going. As far as the dinner I typically set up before guests arrive so I can start playing casual music during cocktail hour and dinner.  If you would like I can announce the bridal party as they arrive, from there we can have special dances (1st dance, bride/father, groom/mother etc..) then to the reception dance. I have light stands, moonflower beam and a small laser that displays for the lighting. If you are in the twin cities metro the price would be $350 for the evening.  A small charge for travel if you are out state a little further.

    Thanks

  • Do a search on Craigslist.  There are tons of reasonable DJ's on there.  Just make sure to ask for references!
  • USTchica, thank you for posting his response.  Also, mzad & snacky, I will check into both.  References are a must!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  This is our last big thing to book and we're set for May 5th!!!
