Minnesota-Minneapolis and St. Paul

Registering at Home Depot? Oh, yes. Yes we are.

FI and I just decided that we're swapping out Williams Sonoma for the Home Depot. Practicality over class, right? :)

Thing is, the Williams Sonoma was really just for me, and Home Depot has some tools and gear we really would both LOVE. I kind of can't wait, to be honest. I love it in there.

We're also registering at Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Anyone else going the Depot route?

That seems like a good idea.  We're going to use our money that we receive to buy things for our home improvement projects at Home Depot!  Nice for the guys though and the house!

Not Home Depo, but we did register at Menards.  They had everything from garden lights to toaster ovens.  Someone even got us a ladder (our old one was a death trap).  We're big DIYers, so this was one of our favorite registries.

Yeah. My one hesitation is that I know some people will turn up their noses and go "Pfft, how undignified of them."

And that's okay. We are who we are, eh? And some of us happen to love house paint and lawnmowers ...

Had we gotten married before our Big Fat Remodel, I would have registered at Lowe's for sure. I love me some home improvement projects.

ETA: I honestly think more people will appreciate the Home Depot registry than the Williams-Sonoma registry. We're in a recession! People are placing higher value on practicality! $299 toaster ovens are ostentatious!

We're not registering there, but we've had several friends who did! Nothing wrong with it -- and it's practical!

We are registering at Menards and Target.  FI is super pumped to register at Menards and even jokes about putting 2x4s on the registry…. I hope he’s joking !!

One of my best friends registered there and got a great turn out! What town doesn't have a Home Depot :) They just bought a foreclosure and gutted the place so it really helped them out with those expenses!

We bought a new condo so all we had to do was paint it, which was a blessing and a curse because there was no work to do but I wish I could have picked out fixtures and such that goes with our taste.

Have fun with it, I love Home Depot!!

Nothing wrong with Home Depot!  The only reason we didn't register there is that they don't have an online registry...you have to go to the store to register and to buy items.  I just went on their website and couldn't even find a registry section, so people who want to buy stuff can't even look in advance to see what you want (or at least I couldn't find it).

Love Home Depot, nothing "unclassy" about it...I think more people probably don't register there simply because they don't have an online registry which makes it harder for you.  I think it's a great idea and hope you get some great things!

I think we might register  at Home Depot.  We have most of the typical household items and only need a few things.  We are registering at Bed Bath and Beyond, Macys, Sears (FI wants tools!) and maybe Home Depot.  Everyone who knows us, knows we DIY everything at our house.  And since we have lots of projects we are working on, it would not surprise anyone that we registered at Home Depot.

ohhh, I'm so jealous of your registry!  I wanted to register at Home Depot but they had phased it out and wouldn't allow anyone to do it.  Must've seen the error of their ways!

Can I ask where you found a Home Depot to register at? I had looked into it and found evidence online that they had dropped their registry program a couple of years ago. I would LOVE to register there. Please share how you found it.

That is an awesome idea.  FI is throwing a fit about registering at "girly" places.  Maybe this is a good compromise...

<div>I'm glad you brought this up! Before I posted I had googled "wedding registry at Home Depot" and got this page and just assumed it was like other stores:</div><div><a href="http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/GiftRegistrySearchView?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053">http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/GiftRegistrySearchView?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053</a></div><div>
</div><div>But now I just went back and saw this:</div><div><span style="color:#333333;font-family:Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'MS Sans-Serif', sans-serif;line-height:normal;font-size:12px;" class="Apple-style-span">"We’re sorry, the Online Gift Registry is not connected to our stores in any way. You can only access Online Gift Registries that were created on homedepot.com here."</span></div><div><span style="color:#333333;font-family:Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'MS Sans-Serif', sans-serif;line-height:normal;font-size:12px;" class="Apple-style-span">

I'm not sure. Might be giving them a call and will update this thread with what they say.</span></div>

    Um, and this:

"We're sorry. We are not accepting Online Gift Registries at this time."

    wtf, Home Depot?

Update: Just talked to Lowe's customer service and they closed their registry programs in July 2009.

I did.  It was a bit of a problem.  Lots of people called us because they could not figure out how to work the registry.  They went online, found the registry but couldn’t find us.  Well you have to pick, online or in store—they do not connect.  I knew we had to pick before hand and even wrote HomeDepot (instore only) on my info card.  People still didn’t get it.

A family friend said she went online, couldn’t find it so she went to a store.  She was told the store told her she needed to know the exact location that we registered at to get the registry.   She didn’t know so she called us.  I told her, she went back, got the registry and said it was really hard to read so she gave up and went home.

Now, that is the worst story I heard (although I got at least 5 calls about minor issues).  However, I wanted to test the things out so I called the Elk River store and asked for (insert our last names) registry.  They pulled it up really quickly. So I don’t know why some people have issues and others don’t.  One thing I do know is that it is hard to find things off the registry form and as the registering party you need to hard write the number codes to each item you want and then give it to someone to enter into the database.  Lots of room for error.  Also, I have heard that a lot of times purchased gifts don’t get taken off your registry because it isn’t as easy/common of a process for the cashiers as it is for other stores like Target.

Over all it was hubby’s favorite place.  I was so worried that nobody was buying stuff that I asked all his friends to go there—tacky right. J

We didn't do Home Deopt, but we just did Menards this past weekend (there is a Menards in my hometown but no Home Depot). Registering at Menards went great and FI even got into it. I'm pretty sure people can't buy items online from Menards, but you can delete and change the number of things you registered for online. I'm pretty sure most of our guest list will prefer going to an actual store so that shouldn't be a problem for us. If there are issues with registering at Home Depot definitely check Menards out too. Now is a fun time to do it because they have all of their outdoor furniture and garden supplies :)

    Thanks everyone!

We decided we'll do Menards. There are plenty in MN and Chicago (where we live), but there aren't any in Colorado where FI's family and a lot of our friends are from. Oh well! There will be plenty more things to choose from, hehe.

But seriously, Home Depot and Lowes are losing out on a lot of potential business. Get your act together, guys! :)

We were planning to register at Home Depot.  I called them earlier this week and was told the same thing that was already posted here - it's all done in-store only now.  The online registry has been discontinued.  And you do have to write down what you want to put on your registry.  I didn't think this would matter too much.  I would definitely prefer an online option, but more than anything, we want a home improvement store option - either Home Depot, Menards or Lowes.  We don't care which.  Maybe I will look and see how Menards does theirs.  Either way is fine with us - we just want to register someplace where we know we spend lots and lots of time/money at already.  :)

If we were registering, we'd probably go to Home Depot or Menards, but I think we're just going to ask for cash.  We could sure use the gifts now, though.  We just bought a house and are building a patio and finishing a fence.  Too bad the wedding's a year from now.  It'd sure be funny to get a huge pile of gift wrapped 20-pound paver bricks at the wedding!
