When to send invitations?

I'm not sending out STD cards. When do I send out invitations though? Even though it's a very casual & laid back ceremony/reception, I still need people to RSVP for a count for the food.

Re: When to send invitations?

  • We sent ours 2 mo prior and had a 1 mo prior RSVP date. This worked out really really well. It gave people enough of a heads up (even though we did have the STD too) and allowed us a cushion for stragglers to get their stuff in or for us to call people who never responded. Your caterer will also want to know final headcounts in advance, so it is good to give yourself some time like this.

When does your caterer need a final count? That should really determine your RSVP date (plus extra time to track down those who haven't yet responded).

Most etiquette sources say to mail invites 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

  • 6-8 weeks is the norm. But as PPs said, find out when you need to know final counts. Make sure the RSVP date is at the very least a few days before that (a week or two would be good, gives you enough time to get a few late ones or call people that haven't responded). Then do 6-8 weeks before that date.

  • Ok, I'll plan on 2 months prior and have a month to play with RSVP's. Thanks!

No caterer to worry about per say...I'm having sandwiches brought in from Brine's in Stillwater. They would need less than a week. My 'reception' is more like a family picnic than a traditional wedding. We'll be at a park playing kickball, bocce ball, Montana Golf, and other games all afternoon.
