Married ladies: W-2 stuff

I just received my W-2 preview from my company and have until the end of November to submit any corrections, and of course it's got my old name on it and also says my marital status is single.

So far I have only had my social security card changed (haven't done any work emails or paycheck, bank or license stuff yet) ... so does anyone know what I do with this? Do I leave it as-is and deal with it come tax-time, or should I submit my changes, including my name and marital status, now?

</div><div>It's not a matter of wanting to wait -- it's just been a very crazy, hectic time since the wedding. I travel a ton for work so that makes getting drivers license, bank, and other stops kind of tricky with timing. :)</div><div>
</div><div>But looks like I should bump this up on the priority list!

OHHH I get it! I work in a super small office so I was able to change my W-2 right when I got back, without having updated ID/SS. If you work in a larger corp office you might have to wait until you have either a Passport or both your Drivers License and your SS changed over to change the W-2. Changing last names sure is a PITA! I'd say if you can change your W-2 without having everything else changed do it. :)

Did your HR deptartment say what paperwork you needed to do the update? I would think the SS card is enough to get the ball rolling on all of your work paperwork.

I'm waiting to hear back on W-2 change stuff. The company I work for is based in India so half the time they respond with the incorrect information about US policies anyways! Ha, so yeah, I agree, it's a huge PITA! :)

Because you had your SS changed, you have to atleast change your name on your taxes for this next year. I would just assume you would have problems trying to do taxes when your social security number pulls up your married name but your other stuff is still in your maiden name. I could be wrong though.

I have everything changed EXCEPT my SS card so I haven't changed my W-2 form. My co-worker hasn't changed her SS card since she was married about 35 years ago haha. Her taxes come in her maiden name still.

To change my name at my job (a fairly large hospital system) all they needed was my new SS card.
I started my job about a month after I got married, so when I filled out the W2 I had it checked married.....even though I didn't have any of my name change stuff done.   So it was under my old last name.  When I did go in to do the name change stuff, they said that I didn't need to do a new W2 if I wasn't changing my status (married/single) or my exemptions.   Sorry....that probably doesn't help you in your situation.
As far as for banks, USBank needed my new SS and license in order to change my name.  It took me a few weeks after I changed it at the bank to get to HR at work, but I had a direct deposit or 2 go into my bank account no problem with the check being made out to my maiden name and my bank account having the new last name.

Good luck with everything...it is a little bit of a PITA though!

Thanks for all the help! I hope I can get it changed with my employer without a lot of hassle.

Yesterday I went and got my new license and updated my car title and registration. Also changed one of my credit cards. Woo hoo!
