Cake

We are just starting to look at cakes and figure out what we want/like, but before I go around getting different quotes I would like some input as to what they cost. I don't want to feel like I'm being put through the ringer but I don't have a clue as to what they cost. We are looking at probably 200 people, so more than likely a 4-tierd cake. Any input would be great!!  TIA

Most of the places I found cost anywhere between $2.50 and $6.00 a slice for tiered cake. It all depends on where you go & what kinds of fillings/frostings you get.

We just got done with our 6th and final tasting (more reviews in bio) with Jeff Perila www.sweettreatsbyjeff.com and were quoted about $420 for a small 2 tier cake and 200 cupcakes.  We were quoted nearly $1100 with  Buttercream for a 4 tiered cake to feed the same amount of guests and prices varied between with the other places. we're paying $3.50/slice from Queen of Cakes for a 3 tiered cake (88 servings) and then getting sheet cakes from Costco ($17 for 48 slices).  QOC sheet cakes are $1.75/slice.  At Buttercream, it's $3.75/slice and the DO NOT do sheet cakes.  They were not very customer friendly/oriented, so that's why we chose QOC in the end.

Is it cheaper to do cupcakes instead of cake??

It really depends on what you want.  I think you can get creative, as long as it works with your venue, and use sheetcakes or faux cakes.  It was cheaper for us because we didn't want to use Buttercream (preferred vender) and we didn't want to pay a cake-cutting fee or have someone else be in charge of cutting and serving the cake.  With cupcakes everyone can help themselves and we just need to provide napkins.  Our DOC will cut the small cake for the bridal party. Plus I think the cupcakes look really cute when displayed properly

Blech DON'T go with Buttercream.  Our experience was terrible (venue twins with martiac, so they are preferred vendor).  We went there first and I hated the service.  The guy kept trying to talk me out my my very simple design into something more complicated (ie more $$ and IMO, uglier lol).  Key's Cafe is fantastic!  Wuollet was also great service and taste wise.  But Penny Steele has the best cake I've ever tasted!  We're doing a 3 tier (2 faux tiers) cake for a flat $200.  Sheet cakes are $3.40/slice.  Cheaper than Buttercream.  Key's was the most reasonably priced and the taste was awesome, but just wasn't Penny Steee haha.  We were quoted about $400 for about 170 servings.  HTH and GL!

I Want Cake

I was quoted upwards of $7/slice from Jessica's Cakes (who we're using) and Wuollet, and over $8/slice from Penny Steele and Queen of Cakes, but that's entirely because I don't believe in fake cakes and don't want cupcakes (fillings are very important to me and you don't get much or any at all with cupcakes), and our design is pretty unique and time-consuming.  We did get a much lower quote from another "baker" who decorates crappy-tasting grocery store cake beautifully, but I can't pretend I'd be proud to serve something that doesn't taste as good as it looks.  It really depends entirely on what you want in and on your cake.  I've seen $2/slice cake and I've seen $10/slice cake.

I would have to disagree with the filling comment above...
In some cases this may be true,  but Jeff''s cupcakes were definately filled! FI and I cut each in half to share at the tasting and both halves had plenty of yummy filling

We just had a tasting w/Sweet treats by Jeff as well who served us cupcakes (although we are getting actual cake).  3 out of 4 were filled and were AMAZING.  And he gave us 4 to take home and enjoy later. Highly recommend Jeff... waaay less $ than other bakers AND the cake is delicious!  He could totally charge way more if he wanted, they are very good.
