Rental Cakes?

Anyone done this?

Both of the above places have fake rental cakes that you rent to have on display. You'd obviously buy sheet cakes for the guests... And then have this on display as your "cake" for about a $60-70 rental price.
I'm kinda trying to cut costs a bit. No clue how much cakes really cost. I saw on Buttercream's website that a half sheet cake costs about $75. Is this pretty average?
I think I could care less about having a cake for our one year anniversary... I'd rather go buy a cake and have it fresh. :)

I think that is kind of a neat idea actually. It is really pretty and would definitely save costs. If I wasn't having a friend make our cake for us, I would definitely consider it. We are just having a small 2 or 3 tier cake (made by my MOH) and then we are buying sheet cakes for the guests. I think that we are going to buy our sheet cakes from CostCo or Sam's Club. They are a lot less expensive than what you had mentioned and they are absolutely delicious!

We got our cakes from Sam's Club.  We had a 10" cake on each table and they doubled as our centerpieces.   We got gerbera daisies from our florist and had one on each cake.  Then as our 'receiving line' we went around to each table and cut the first piece.... then had the photographer take a pic of us with each table.   Worked really well.  Everyone was asking where the cake was from because it was so good.

A friend of mine just did that for her wedding in June and honestly, I think I'm one of the only people that noticed it was fake and that they never cut the actual cake, and that's probably just because I'm a bride. I pointed it out to FI later and he thought I was making it up.

My aunt and uncle own a bakery and did my cake for me.  Since they had to transport it from IA to MN it was easier for them to do a "fake" cake (styrofoam) for the display cake and sheet cakes to serve.  They did do real cake for the top tier so we could still do the traditional cake cutting which was really nice!  It wasn't a rental but still saved a bunch of money doing it that way.

None of the guests had any idea it wasn't real.  I'm not sure how the rental cakes are done, but mine was freshly decorated so there was no way of knowing that it wasn't real cake under the frosting!
