Gratuity for DJ??

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about  tipping the DJ? I got an email from the DJ company we booked with and it said this:  Remember, there is no sales tax on our service but gratuities are customary ($40-$60 Range) but that is totally up to you. Is this the norm? I had no clue all the different people you book with are supposed to be tipped. Including photographer, florist and alter boys...

There was a website I saw about this. I googles tipping wedding vendors. I think that Martha Stewart has an article about this.
I am interested to see what people say. I have no clue what to tip. I usually do 20% for service people but there is no way I am giving my photographer 20%!!!
I see that you can order 'specialized' tipping envelopes on websites....

They are supposed to charge sales tax because it's a business. I would be wondering if they even have a vendor's license... People do usually tip vendors, but they shouldn't ask for it.

I am going to tip my hair and make-up people, but I am not tipping the venue, the photog or the DJ. We are paying a FORTUNE for everything and there is no way I am giving them 20%!!! Now, I was planning on feeding them at the reception.

I always thought you kindly tipped individuals if they did not own their own business, or were working for a company.  For example, the DJ, videographer, and photographer all own their own business, so I wasn't planning on tipping them.  They are aware of the contracted price we agreed upon, so I wouldn't think they'd expect any more.

Im using Solid gold, which was voted one of the best through the knot. I thought it was also strange that they asked as well. You would also think as much as they charge that they are getting enough of a tip. I am a hairstylist and bartender who receives tips, but I've never heard of this one! I was curious to see if others would/or have tipped their DJ. Thanks for the info!

I have also heard that you only tip if they do not own their own business.  Even though my hair and makeup ladies do own there own business, I am still planning on tipping them.  For everyone else though, probably not since they own their own businesses.  I may send a card later with a tip if I am really impressed at the end of the wedding!

I've heard that you only tip if they do not own their own business also. For example, I am not tipping my Photographer, Florist, Baker, or DJ because they all own their business and I'm paying them a lot already for their services! I also agree with the post about the contracted price that we agreed upon and they should not expect anything more either... and if they happen to get a little more then that would be an added bonus... but you don't have to tip.
