When to start alterations....?

I guess I need a hem, bustle and some inches taken off.....should I get my dress in ASAP?  Wedding is April 30th?

My "The Knot Lists" book that my mom gave me says to start alterations 6-8 weeks before the wedding?

I'm actually going to start mine soon since I need a lot done.  She's going to do the initial work soon then make little changes later if neccessary.  My dress has tiers of lace at the bottom and its about 2 feet too long, so its going to be a lot of work to fix that!
