Name change by mail

Hi- I was wondering if anyone changed their name on their social security card by mail; I only hear how bad it is going in person the social security office, so I was thinking of doing it by mail.  I'm mostly just concerned about getting everything back that I have to send in.  Has anyone had a good experience doing it through the mail?

I changed my name by mail and it was SO convenient.  I got a confirmation letter about a week or so after I sent everything in and got my new card a few weeks after that.  I highly recommend it.  Just make sure you download/print off the correct form, and send in a certified marriage license.

Maggie- did you do it while you lived here though?  I've been told by a few different people that you HAVE to go to the SS office if you live in the 7-county metro.

I think there was a debate about having to go in vs mailing it for the metro area a while back, and the wording had changed that if you live in the metro area you could go in OR mail.

I hate doing these types of things (well, who really likes them) but I did run to the SS office on a Tuesday afternoon and was in and out in around 10 minutes. I was just nervous about having to mail in my marriage cert. somewhere, so I just bit the bullet and went.

Steph -- I live in the metro, but I went to a SS office in Iowa to do my name change. You can do the name change at any SS office in the country, provided it's a location that can issue new cards. So that makes me think that anybody can do it by mail.

I live in IA, but my marriage cert is from MN.  I could have gone in to the SS in Des Moines, but they also said that I could mail it in.  For convenience sake, I just mailed it in.  I guess I don't know what the requirements are if you live in the Twin Cities area.

Since SS is a national organization (not sure that organization is the word I'm looking for) I think the requirements are the same no matter where in the country you live.

<div>I misworded that.  I know that it's all the same "requirements" in terms of what documentation/application you need.  I remember reading on the SS website sometime specific to the Twin Cities. </div><div>
