Alterations Budget

I'm heading into my first alterations appointment in a couple weeks and i have absolutely no idea what to expect cost wise.  I realize that it varies greatly depending on what i s needed.  Im not sure if i should budget $50 or $350

Any hints on what i can expect, or what you paid and what you had done?  I am most likely only going to need a bustle (for this dress) and a repair on a broken hook & eye.

I just paid a little over $300. She had to take it on on the sides around the bust area, do a 13-point bustle and take some off the lenght. But my dress was VERY detailed, having quite a bit of beadwork on it. I was pleased with the price and she did a beautiful job with my dress!

Who is doing the alterations? Can you ask for a ballpark estimate ahead of time if you explain what needs to be done?

I had mine done at the place where I bought my dress and the alterations and the bustle were about $275. I would say with what you need done, you should budget at least $200. For my dress, the price was a bit more b/c I had a lot of beading which he had to be very careful with while doing the alterations. If your dress is pretty plain or not much detail, it may be on the lower side.

This is what a bridal consultant advised me on:  $100 hem, $60 side seams (along the bust), $5 replacing the hook and $15 for each bustle spot.

The hook is just the hook at the top of the zipper and they suggest replacing it with a more heavy duty one which I would recommend because I was at a wedding this summer where the brides's hook broke (they aren't very sturdy) and her zipper kept starting to unzip-not something you want to worry about when your dancing.

This is of course the one this salon goes through but it gives you somewhat of an idea.

    Good luck!

I am using Perfect Alterations on Bethel - for hemming all my layers, pressing, and sewing a bustle it was right around 300 dollars.

Mine was around 300ish, also done by Linda Hine. More pricey than I thought but she did good work. I had a lot of chiffon layers that had to be hemmed, it needed taken in around the waist, and a bustle added.

I am only having a bustle done (I believe she said 10 point) and a repair on a hook & eye and a pressing/steaming and it is running me $230.  Hope that helps!

I used Monica Gwaltney.  I had a single point bustle, cups sewn in and boning taken out of the bust along with it being taken in a bit on the sides of the bust.  She was under $100.

I highly recommend Monica Gwaltney as well. She did 2 hems on mine (13 layers worth of hem!) put cups in, took it in on the sides, raised it up from the waist and left all the extra fabric in it so it could be realtered as needed. 250. And she treats you like a princess and is fast at what she does, but very meticulous.

Wow, so i met with my alterations lady (Linda Hammond) and i completely forgot to ask what the alterations were going to cost before i left her house.  I called her back, and unless anything comes up at the second fitting, its estimated at $35.

I dont know how many points my bustle is, but other than the bustle, the only thing I needed was a new hook and eye at the zipper, and 2 pieces of lace that had come untacked.

Also, since its a floofy tulle skirt with no decoration, i think my bustle will be simple, 3 or 5 points based on what i saw pinned.

So far so good, let me know if anyone wants her contact info.
