How much time for Pro Pics?

For the ladies who are not yet married, how much time are you putting in the timeline for formal professional pics and for the married ladies how much time did you allot and how much did you spend on formals?

If you already have a photographer I would talk to them and see what they say. While I can't speak from experience yet, I can tell you that I gave a lot of information to my photographer so she could tell me how much time to allow, such as family size, who all I wanted pictures of, and if we were changing locations.

I do have my timeline in my profile with all the photography times if you want to get an idea though.

We're doing formal shots for about 2.5 hours before the ceremony.

We allotted about an hour for pre-ceremony pictures (just the guys and just the girls).  We spent maybe 30 minutes, but we were running a little late anyway.

We allotted about 90 minutes after (group shots, couple shots, and family pictures.)  We took probably 2 hours, but that was because our families were being difficult. And we had a LOT of families to deal with (thanks, divorce.)

We allotted 2 hours but us girls were not ready until 45 mins later than planned, plus the photog's lights kept getting too hot and not working so we kept having to take breaks to let them cool.  I wish we had allotted more time because there were a lot of formal pics that we didn't get to take.  Plus people wander etc and 1 hour was definitely not enough time for all of them  :/

We are kinda doing things differently than most because of our late evening wedding, so we are planning on having a lot of time in the late afternoon right before the ceremony for pictures. No specific number of hours yet, but we haven't gotten that far. We figure we will eat a light/early dinner around 3ish, get dressed, and then meet (boys&girls) for pictures. Our ceremony won't be until 7 or 730 so we will have a lot of time I think.

FI and I are starting pics just the 2 of us at 1:15.
Wedding party formals start at 2:00
    Family formals start at 2:45

All of our pics must be done by 3:30 (ceremony starts at 4)

We are also doing more fun wedding party pics after the ceremony

Oh this is such a good idea.  That would have spaced things out so not EVERYONE has to be ready at the same time.

We had me be ready last so that everything was fresh but obviously most of the pics couldn't start until I was ready so that probably would have made it go a lot better.

I actually stole my timeline from a friend of mine who just got married last August.  It worked really well to have a "call time" in that group that way you didn't have to searching from grandma or uncle Bob; and people who won't be in pics until later don't have to stand around waiting either.

If you are doing a first look than I would budget at least an hour with your groom depending if you want some indoor and outdoor shots. Then depending on your timeline... budget another 30 for your bridal party and another 30 for family either before or after the ceremony. The best shots your photographer will get are not going to be the staged ones. Don't waste a lot of time on those, give a shot list with names and descriptions and they should be able to get candids of all of your important family members that are ten times better than the ones that are planned out.

We're doing pro pics of the wedding party/just me/first look from 11:30-12:30 before the ceremony, then from about 2:45-4:00 or 4:15 with the families. We need to kill time until cocktail hour starts at 4:30, so I'm hoping we actually use that whole time.

This is the time line my photog recommended:

    12:00
We arrive and take photos of all of you getting ready and the details
    1:00 First look
1:30 Photos with the wedding party
    2:00 Family photos
2:30 You guys go hang out and relax before the ceremony
    3:00 Ceremony

Also I should mention that I didn't want a ton of family posed pictures, I am just not a fan of the super formal looking pics.

Our photographer said 60 mins for first look and BP pics, 60 mins for family pics, 45 for bridals, and 30 mins after the ceremony is over for new hubby and I.
