spray tan vs tanning booth

Hey ladies, I'm debating doing a spray tan for my wedding, but I know NOTHING about them! Any suggestions  for spray tan vs going to the tanning booth. I don't want to be real dark, but I was a nice base tan for the wedding and honeymoon. With a spray tan will it come off on my dress? What should I wear to a spray tan to be sure I don't have any lines showing when I wear my dress? Any recommnedations where to go? Just want to look as good as possible at my wedding :) Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

Re: spray tan vs tanning booth

  • Don't go to a tanning booth. I used to do it and it's just not worth it. I burn easily and it's just so unsafe. Plus when you really look at it, it's more expensive than spray tanning.

I did a spray tan a few years ago and I loved it! I got it done at Carribean Beach in St. Cloud. It was a great color, not fake looking, but tan. It was pretty simple to do, just stand there (in a weird position) and let it spray. I don't remember it getting on anything except maybe the clothes I wore that day. I tanned for a formal and it never got on my dress, though it was pink, not white/ivory.

Here is a pic to show how not fake it looked :-)

(PS - My FI was up for my sorority's man of the year so that's why he has a crown. He won!)

I'm not 100% positive but if you're looking to get any kind of base for sun tanning during your honeymoon a spray tan won't help you.  I believe it's a totally different kind of tanning - using chemicals to tan/color the skin.

I completely understand the risks of tanning in a tanning booth but I prefer that method of tanning to prep my skin for tropical vacations.  That said, I have olive skin that tans easily and I rarely burn.  I also use SPF & tanning lotions - musts if you choose a tanning booth.

  • I go to Body & Sol TanSpa in St. Louis Park for spay tans for special occasions.  It's not a very convenient location for me, but hey do a really nice job.

  • I went tanning in a stand up for our wedding. I've done spray tans before but didn't  like the result for something as big as a wedding day.
  • Before our wedding, my wedding dress salon actual told me not to spray tan because there's the risk of it coming off on your wedding gown.

  • I did a spray tan for my wedding, and it was a waste of money because it all came off/faded away before my wedding day. I got it done on Thursday 6pm, and the wedding was on Saturday at 6pm. This was through a salon where somebody sprayed me.

I had much better luck another time, for a special occasion, when I went to a tanning booth where it was an automated spraying machine. The color stayed on. However, like PP said, it came off oddly, I had speckles several days later on my legs. It didn't matter, however, as it was early spring and I was wearing pants most of the time.

Right now, I use Jergen's self tanning lotion in the summer to get color, and I really like it. It's much less expensive than a tanning booth or spray tan salon, and it gives nice, natural color.

If your budget allows, I'd recommend doing a trial run with all 3 of these, and see which one works best. You could also wear some tight-fitting white clothes that you don't care about to see if the color comes off.
  • I just spray tanned for our trip to Hawaii over Christmas.. Sunshine Palace Waite Park.

No more am I thinking about spray tan for our wedding!  I love it for every day if you have the time to go back in and keep up with it.. (every 3 days approx)  but on the fourth day of our vacation the tanner in my cleavage (BEWARE of the cleavage) had all but melted off so I had a giant white patch between my boobs from the spray tan.

Also, it does rub off on clothes that are tight or abrasive (lace up dresses?)  All of the bras I wear after I spray tan have tanner residue on them.

And learn from my Hawaii mistake.. unless you plan on finding a place on your honeymoon that spray tans your going to look like a cheetah half way through :/   I took a loofa (sp)  and scrubbed the crap our of my spots.. needless to say even with laying out in the sun I came back whiter than when I left .
