FRANTIC- Ordained friend to marry us- will it be legal?

We want a friend of ours to marry us, so we have been looking on the internet and we found one that seems legit- I called our Vital records office to make sure that if our friend goes through with this we will be legally married- They acted like I was speaking a different language..
Anyone know how we can find out in Hennepin County or in MN the in's and outs of this- I know we can go down to the JP and do it but we really wanted this route to be how we got married and the day!

Re: FRANTIC- Ordained friend to marry us- will it be legal?

  • Yes. A friend of our got ordained online and it was totally legit. I think the person marrying you just has to be registered with the county after he/she receives The certificate of Ordination. here is Hennepin county's link : http://hennepin.us/portal/site/HennepinUS/menuitem.b1ab75471750e40fa01dfb47ccf06498/?vgnextoid=9bfc855e4c874210VgnVCM10000049114689RCRD Or Ramsey county http://www.co.ramsey.mn.us/ph/vr/credentials_of_ordination.htm I believe registering at any county works, then you are legal to form ceremonies in the state.
  • What she said!  My Dad got ordained on a lark at the Universal Life Church (online) and he just had to register with the state and he was good to go. He has actually  married someone now so I can vouch for it being totally legit.
  • Yep, we are doing the same.  Get them registered and you should be set!  They really don't make this information easy to get and we were confused for awhile too,
  • Here's another thought (it may sound weird but I've seen it done before).

Hire a JP to come marry you "officially" that morning (in jeans and a tshirt or whatever you are wearing that AM) it can take up to 10 minutes, including the signing of the paperwork.

Then have your gorgeous ceremony in your dress, and have your friend do that ceremony, he can still pronounce you man and wife, and noone at the wedding (except those there for the AM ceremony) would know the difference :)

It is just a thought if you are having trouble getting your friend ordained.

  • A friend of ours who was already ordained online married us. He just had to file something with Hennepin County the week before the wedding, because he hadn't performed a ceremony in the county before, but it was all perfectly legal.
