ceremony musicians

Wondering about prices on ceremony musicians.  Violinists and pianist.  What is everyone else paying?  Is $300 normal?

I'd say it depends on what you want them to play and how long you'll need them for.

*Folks who play at the church/venue often and will be plaing standard wedding music for the ceremony: $300 is very appropriate, maybe even a bit generous!

*College students playing standard wedding tunes, along with a few things you've picked out: you may want to have a 45 minute rehearsal a few days in advance, so $400+ would be more appropriate for their time.

*Retired or semi-professionals who advertise through the church or venue, and can play just about anything you throw at them: $400+ for their services.

Generally, the more complicated or irregular the music is, the more musicians should be compensated for their talent and efforts. Also, you may want to offer more or less, depending on whether or not you want the musicians to play while your guests enter and exit the ceremony.

It definitely depends on the experience of the musician and the amount of music you want them to play. Generally college students will charge less than a professional though.

Question: Are you looking for either a pianist OR a violin player? Or violin accompanied by a pianist? Two musicians will obviously cost more than just one.

My FI is a pianist and usually considers transportation costs (if its farther than like 30 min), rehearsal time, practice time, and any new music he may have to get/learn when charging for weddings. If I remember correctly, in the past he has charged around $200 for local weddings (he lives in Ohio now, moving to Chicago this summer), and has traveled back to WI to play for friends, in which case he charged for lodging and travel as well.

It is for both a violinist and pianist.  I think it is a good deal and they sound good.  Thanks for your advise!

I am paying just under $500 for a pianist...but she's playing through the cocktail hour also.

$300 sounds like a great deal!
