Cake Recommendations - No fondant please!

My fiancee and I are planning a wedding from out of town and will be in the Twin Cities in a few weeks to meet with more vendors. We're hoping to do a bunch of cake tastings, but I don't know where to start. We both dislike fondant, so I'm looking for someone who can make great-looking (and of course great-tasting) cakes with frosting. What delicious and not-insanely-priced bakers can you recommend?

Queen of Cakes!!  They were the best cake we tasted, and my husband was/is super picky about his sweets.  We absolutely loved their cakes.

We liked Queen of Cakes and Penny Steele.  I'd say to try both.

We are using Buttercream, they were very reasonable and do not use fondant on any of their cakes!

My non-fondant baker is in St. Cloud (Icing Dreams) but I was a guest at a wedding on Friday that had cake from Buttercream and it was DEEEEELICIOUS.

Ditto the ladies above... Buttercream cake is amazing.  I haven't picked anything yet for mine, but was also recently at a wedding that had Buttercream cake and it was soooo delicious.  I've also tried Keys' cake at the Wfair and that was quite good!

I'm going to say Queen of Cakes again.  By far the best cake we tried, with the most reasonable price, too!  Terri is fabulous!  She had about 8 different cake/icing combinations for us to try at our tasting, and even put together a special request that I asked for.

Cold Spring Bakery, a bit out of the cities, but they will deliver to the cities. They have received awards from theknot.com, beautiful cakes, and good prices, and oh so good tasting. I think it would be worth a drive out there to check them out! www.coldspringbakery.com

As for the type of cake, I've seen a picture of a cake covered in white chocolate shavings (not curls) that I thought was really pretty, that's what we're doing, I'm not sure of flavors yet.

Ditto QofC! Also, not sure what your budget is, but Woullet is amazing as well. They've got this princess torte that is to die for, and they use marzipan, which is delicious!

Also check out Taste of Scandanavia.  That's my recommendation, and what we booked.
