DJ vs IPOD?

I was thinking about it and if I hired a DJ i really wouldnt want him to say much (very non traditonal wedding....no annoucing the bridal party, no first dance etc) I want it to be more of a party. So should I just save about a $1000 and use an IPOD? But there could be downfalls to that also. Thoughts?

If a party/club atmosphere is what you want, I almost feel like a DJ is more important.  Without all of the traditional stuff, the DJ will basically be the #1 (only?) reason why your wedding is successful...if that makes sense?

I would be nervous trying to select all of the right music to get the crowd pumped up.  Plus, depending on the size of the wedding, you would still need to rent big speakers and have some sort of backup system if for some reason your ipod doesn't play.

Just my 2 cents though :)

I agree... most DJ's a less then $1,000 you can get some great deals out there. DJ's do more then just play music, they really keep the partying going! I was reading an article on the knot one day and it said that a DJ is one thing not to cut out!

Definitely put a lot of thought into it and research some DJ's to see what deals are out there!

There are also some great DJs here in the area and I think we are paying $645. Not too bad if you ask me. Some of the people are more expensive, and some are less. I would definitely say find a good DJ. They really know how to keep the party going.

I know a lot of times you can get $100 off if you meet a DJ at a bridal show so many hit a couple of those up.  I think Buckeye Entertainment is somewhere around $595.

We are going with the non-traditional wedding/reception as well and have opted for using an iPod.  We want our guests to mingle and relax without the pressure of someone in the background telling them to dance, overly loud music, etc.  A very close friend will announce us....more relaxed and a familiar voice talking to the crowd.  Our reception site has built-in sound system.

I think it depends how big of a wedding you are having. My friend had an ipod wedding with a friend doing announcements and keeping track of the music for 110 guests and it worked out beautifully. However for anything bigger than that, I think you need a DJ. Regardless, you need someone in charge of the music whether it be a friend or a DJ.
