April 2013 Weddings

Any other DJ request list nazis?

I'm pretty much just wanting to give our DJ a list of all songs I want played and don't care to hear what the DJ thinks is good music lol. So far I maxed out the online request list at 25 songs and have a list of songs we want played during dinner as well. I figure we're paying him, so we wanna hear what we wanna hear right?

Anyone else doing the same? I have spent so much time and thought into the request list cause music and everyone having a good time dancing is a HUGE deal to me. I can't stand when the DJ sucks and everyone's sitting around and ends up leaving early cause it's no fun.

Re: Any other DJ request list nazis?

  • No. I hear music is the most important thing of the whole wedding !!
  • I'm not doing an online request form but I did make a list of songs I want to hear.  FI didn't have any to add to it, "my music isn't wedding-appropriate," he said.  Lol.
  • We definitely listed our preference and had some must plays, but we actually tried to be really careful in picking a DJ who would go with the crowd rather than just what we would want to hear. We also want everyone dancing and aren't sure that what we think will work actually will work. So, if Britney Spears is going to get the crowd dancing, go for it, you know?
  • Our dj has an online planning form. It has everything that we need to play from when the guests are waiting for the ceremony to begin to songs for everyone walkng down the aisle etc. He does custon entrance work for the bridal party entrance into the reception each couple has a different song. He also has a must play list, and a do not play list etc. I am putting songs on everything that he has on the form.

  • Be careful that you don't go overboard with the DJ.  I would hope that you hired a DJ that you trust and is good at his job.  His job is to feel the vibe of the room and go with what works.  Maybe the songs you think will get people dancing won't work for the party as a whole and the DJ will know that better then anyone.  I think its totally ok to pick a list of must play songs and do not play songs but just take a step back and let the DJ do the job you paid him alot of money to do.

  • I'm sort of doing this -- I actually included a line on our RSVP cards for a song request!  I figure that I don't like everyone's music, but I want everyone to stay and party/dance so we'll hopefully cover all the bases this way!

p.s....I'm totally *not* flaming you for this, but I got shamed for using the term 'nazi' in a post in a different forum.  I realize you are using it in hyperbole but for some reason another bride felt it necessary to call me 'disgusting' for using the term to refer to someone who was being domineering.  Just be careful :)

</div><div>Ahhhh I'm used to the other women on these boards. They've tried multiple times to chase me away but I'm still here. :) </div><div>
</div><div>I have a good idea of what music gets people dancing, typically the same songs everyone dances to at other peoples weddings lol. I'm avoiding things like conga lines and too much old timey music.. that's what puts people back in their seats. I'm sure my must play list won't cover the span of the entire reception but I wanted a good handle on the type of music played. My DJ is good I guess I just view it as I pay him to hear music I like and I know my guests will like, I've been asking friends what songs they want to hear and what not and the theme is pretty much consistent lol. </div>

  • We have been keeping a list of songs we want played. Also there are certain versions of songs I want so yes, my DJ will be getting a detailed list from us too :)

  • I am making a list for my DJ, but I totally trust him to know what will keep the crowd dancing so my list is just songs that I really want to hear and the rest is up to him.
  • We have a definite DO NOT PLAY list. I did make a list of songs I really like and think are dance-able, but the DJ doesn't necessarily have to play them all. I think I will make a special list of Bride's Requests :) Not sure if FI cares much, but I will ask him, too.

I don't think it's weird to make the whole list. But agreed that you have to be careful with the type of music. What you may love to dance to may not work for everyone. For example, I know I really can't dance to rap music, unless it's from the 90s or something haha otherwise I kinda hate it. But I know it's popular, so our DJ may end up playing some of it. There are plenty of songs I like to sing to or listen to, but really cannot dance to them - eg Brick House.

If you're confident that it's a good mix of music that will get the whole crowd going...then go for it! Might as well get your money's worth :) Although it may still be a good idea to give the DJ some leeway if you can tell that not everyone is quite feeling your music.
