April 2013 Weddings

Need help with song for seating the parents

We have a solo violinist playing our ceremony music.  All of the suggestions he has given are so far off-base from what I imagined that it's starting to frustrate me.  I've gone back and forth with him for 2 months and we've finally chosen our ceremony music..... except the seating of the parents.

So far, we're using:
Bridal party entrance: Lover's Waltz by J. Ungar
Bridal entrance: All I Ask of You by A. L. Webber (from Phantom of the Opera)
Recessional: Trumpet Tune by Purcell

He doesn't really have any modern songs in his repertoire, and the classical stuff he has is very dark and depressing.  I'm also hoping to stay away from the "old standards" of Canon in D, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, etc - not that there's anything wrong with them, but what we REALLY want is to have a wedding that isn't like all the dozens of others that our family/friends have had.  (1Corinthians was out of the question as a reading for this reason as well.)

I've just spent 3 hours online trying to figure this out and I can't come up with a single song that isn't overdone or too modern for a classical violinist.  (He came with our package, so we didn't have a choice of musicians.)  Anyone have any ideas?  I want an UPBEAT, happy, light-hearted song that will sound good as a violin solo.  Thanks!

Re: Need help with song for seating the parents

  • My FSIL is a violinist. I've asked her for some suggestions for ya. She wants to know if you want relaxing or upbeat like dance. She is reaching out to her friends as well.
  • Thanks!  I definitely want something that sounds happy, not depressing and dark.  The parents are split - one is traditional and FURIOUS that we're doing a destination wedding and that it's outside, rather than in a church.  The other one is laid back, and probably won't even notice the music.  She just wants us to have a nice wedding.

Personally, I wanted "Somebody's Getting Married" from The Muppets Take Manhattan but I don't want to be responsible when one of the parents keels over from a heart attack.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAiMegDH9NY

  • FI and I wanted fun, upbeat music but one of our musicians wants to be an ole' stick in the mud.  Thus, we are stuck with the classics.  Oh well, I have a feeling we won't really notice the ceremony music too much from the "zomg we're getting married/zomg we're married!!" high.

  • I am a HUGE Muppet fan, and as soon as I saw that movie, I knew I wanted that song played at my wedding.  Sucks that we're stuck with boring, depressing classics.  :-(

  • Ally-if I read Chi's post correctly, it sounds like they're stuck with the classics b/c the musician doesn't have a wide range of wedding music to choose from.

I asked my high school band instructor to play trumpet for the ceremony and cocktail hour and he said he would as our wedding gift if we invited he and his wife to the wedding.  Sweet!  However, he didn't tell me that we'd be limited to choosing classical music for the ceremony.

This man is incredibly talented, I played with him for 7 years and he conducted the Army Band prior to that, he continues to play in area symphonies and orchestras.  He CAN sight read and he CAN learn new music quickly!!  Unfortunately he was really stubborn when it came to our choices so I just caved.  I'd rather have the classics over "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang(which he plucked out of our pep band repetoire, ugh). I really don't think I'm going to notice the ceremony music much anyway :-P
  • OMG, I was totally going to suggest "He'll Make Me Happy" from Muppets Take Manhattan!

What about an old crooner type tune like "When I Fall In Love," "Moon River," "L-O-V-E," or "Delovely"? They're not super up beat but they aren't dark and depressing and might be within your violinist's repertoire.
  • He doesn't even do the old crooners - I probably wouldn't even mind that.  All he has is Bach, Debussy, etc.  It was only by chance that he could do the Phantom of the Opera song - that's the only modern song he has.  The rest is strictly old-school classical.

  • We're having a violin and cello duo and our musicians suggested "Air" from Water Music by Handel. Decently peppy, maybe? I think it sounds pretty great with strings - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kcki_Qybt8

We didn't really plan on having separate music for the parents, but needed something different for timing. We're already asking our musicians to play two instrumental versions of pop music...so we just said yes for this music even tho it wasn't our first choice. I'm so over the little details like this that I just wanted to go ahead and choose something lol.

Chi, my FSIL came through with some.

    Ashokan Farewell
    Vivaldi's Four Seasons
    Air - Johann Sebastian Bach
Heart of the Heartland (it's for mandolin but might be able to be done on violin)
  • Thanks, Phoenix!  And thank your FSIL for me too!
