Tell Us Tuesday!

How did you and your FI meet? How long did you know them before you started dating?

Re: Tell Us Tuesday!

  • I met my FI when we were in 8th grade and we actually dated for a few months back then. We stayed friends throughout high school; and after our first year of college I came home from school, we started hanging out and we just clicked and have been together ever since.

We have known each other for around 14 years total, and have been together 7!!
    image
  • FI and I met one night out. I was out with my girls, and he was working at the time (bar backing) for a friend who managed a bar. We kept locking eyes through out the night, and towards the end of the night we finally spoke with each other. We exchanged numbers and started dating (as I was just got out of a long term relationship, and did not know if I wanted to jump back into another one) But I am sure glad I did, we have been inseparable ever since, going on 7 years.

  • My FI and I met on eHarmony.  I had a six month old and wasn't about to go out to the bars and he was tired of the bar scene.  We messaged for a few days then he asked me out for drinks and we never looked back.

  • FI and I started dating when I was in second year of college. His sister and I were friends from first year and she always hinted that her bro had an interest. I was just coming out of a long term relationship so we started off as friends till eventually we hit it off. We are just so in love and inseperable since

We have been dating for 8 years!

Looking forward to 4/413. Cant wait!

We met in an aol chatroom, of all places.  For those of you who know Chicago, it is HUGE.  I had just moved from the south side to the north side.  Didn't know anyone, and was insanely bored.  I went on the Chicago aol chat room and asked if there was anyone on the north side who could point me in the direction of something fun to do - comedy clubs, pool halls, etc.  I was tired of sitting home alone.  He sent me a private message and we began to talk from there.  We probably talked about 2-3 months online, before he told me he'd love to hear my voice. I knew where that was going, and had no interest in "dating a guy from the internet."  Eventually, he wore me down and we talked on the phone for 11 hours straight.  After that, we talked every day for another 2-3 months.

One Friday night, he called after a bad day at work and said "I'd really, really, really, really love to see you tonight."  I thought to myself (because I'm kind of a smarta$$) "Well, if he threw in one more 'really' I would have gone, but since he didn't....." and then out of nowhere, in the silence, he said "Really."  I took it as a sign and I went.  I'm a big believer in fate.  And for some reason, I wasn't scared.  We had a great night and after that, I made the hour drive to his place twice a week.  After a year of that, his lease was up and my building was going condo so I had to move as well.  We moved in together just after our 1 year anniversary.

My "something old" is also something from that first night we met.  I was wearing a new pair of dark blue capris and broke the cardinal rule by not washing them before the first wearing.  I ended up getting blue dye all over the (mostly) white boy shorts I was wearing underneath.  I went home and when I changed, I noticed it and said to myself "Eh, this can be the something blue at our wedding."  Yes, I knew after the first date I was going to marry him.  I still have the boy shorts, and will be wearing them on our wedding day.

ETA: We've been together 8.5 years now, and I probably "knew" him for 6 months before that.  I had no idea what he looked like, and he had no idea what I looked like, until we saw each other for the first time.

  • Great stories!

FI and I went to high school together in the Chicago burbs 20 years ago, but we had not even heard of eachother!  Our class was 700 students so it wasn't unheard of.  I moved away to Dallas at 22, got married, divorced after 7 years then was in another long term relationship for 4 years in Minnesota.  A friend of mine planned a mini high school get together at his bar and so I came into town and went to meet my friends.  FI was there and I didn't think much about it at the time.  He's a ticket broker and I'm a huge Bon Jovi fan, so I asked him about tickets.  I went back to MN and ended up buying Bon Jovi tickets from him.  I really hadn't realized I was interested in him at the time because I was in the middle of a messy relationship of my own and the last thing I wanted was someone else in my life.  I had wanted to leave Minnesota and the boyfriend and just couldn't do it.  Well, when I was at the reunion one of the things I told my friends was that I couldn't leave the now ex because of Hanna, our dog.  It had been his dog but I loved her to pieces and I just couldn't leave her.  Well, I got back to MN and she all of a sudden was ill (She was old).  3 days later we had to put her to sleep.  It was one of the hardest things I had to do.  As horrible as it was, it was a sign to me.  It was like she was telling me it was okay to leave.  I am usually not a believer in signs at all but this one did something to me.  I moved out shortly after and lived in MN for another 4 months, which is when I started talking on the phone with FI.  I moved back to Chicago August 1, 2009 and we have been together ever since.  Took me awhile, and 3 states to find the right one, but it sure was worth it!

  • I met my fiance in February 2005 when his twin brother's car broke down in the middle of the street with his brother's girlfriend and I in the car and he came to get us.  He was very quiet and didn't say anything to me, but when he had to take his brother's girlfriend and I home later, I thought to myself how handsome he was and I just had this feeling that we'd end up together one day.  At the time he was in a relationship with a girl for a little less than a year and I knew this, but I just had this feeling, it was weird.  Now I never would have thought that I'd like him, because I always thought his brother was a jerk (which was proved more later on), but he's shockingly nothing like his brother.

I saw him at a party thrown at his parent's house in June and I saw him with his then girlfriend and I just felt this jealousy wash over me, it was really weird, but they didn't stay long.  We met again at my surprise birthday party thrown at their parent's house at the end of July and he didn't really talk to me.  In August I heard he broke up with his girlfriend and I started seeing him around more.

By September, we were talking to each other on AIM and hanging out with each other.  I asked him to see a movie with me and he told me he needed to think about it since he was obviously realizing it was a date and he just got out of a year long relationship.  He said yes and before we had the chance to go, we held hands and I felt the spark I knew was there since February and we've been together officially since October 2nd, 2005, so 6 and a half years and got engaged on August 4th, 2011.  Laughing

  • Wow, some really cool stories, I am a big believer in fate and signs, and I love to hear love stories!!  I met my FI right after high school, we were both cashiers at this really awful chain store. We instantly had chemistry but he was a little older and I thought he was wayy out of my league, and he thought the same thing about me.. He came in on his days off for a month straight because he wanted to ask me on a date but then he lost his nerve. He even bought a gift card one day so he could come through my line, which I didnt know until after. Eventually he added me on facebook and asked me on there. I tease him but I love that he was that nervous to talk to me, very flattering.

I knew that he was the one when my dad and stepmom divorced right after we started dating. I was really torn up about it and took alot of my pain out on him, and he stuck around. Not many guys his age would do that.

He knew I was the one about a month after we started dating when I sang along to Bohemian Rhapsody  we watched Waynes World =]

  • My FI and I probably should have met 3 years before we did.  We went to the same college, had overlapping groups of friends freshman year, lived on the same floor of the same dorm sophomore year, and yet didn't meet until second semester of senior year, when we ended up in 2 classes together.  Even then, we didn't talk for the first two months of that semester (even though I sat in front of him in one of the classes and we were both totally crushing on each other).  Cut to one random night when we ended up at the same bar and he decided to get up the nerve to talk to me.  I ended up asking him to go to an improv show with me the next day, and we pretty much saw each other every night after that for the rest of the semester.

Spent 1 year, 8 months long distance (I was in Ireland, he was in Los Angeles), moved in together after that, adopted our kitten, and got engaged February 11, 2012 (a little over a month before our 5 year anniversary, which is the anniversary of that first date).  Getting married 4/7/13 :)

    edited April 2012

The story of how we met is pretty funny; a lot of people don’t believe us when we tell them! But I promise it’s true! We first met in March of 2006. I was off from school for the day (junior in high school), but FI wasn’t because he went to a private school. I had gone to the beach with some friends, we were on our way home when we stopped at a red light.  There was a Jeep Wrangler in front of us with the top down, and some pretty cute looking guys inside. We honked the horn to try and get their attention to say hi, but they thought that we were honking at them to go.

When the light turned green and we started to drive, my friends and I drove up next to them to try to talk to them. Then I realized that they happened to be going to meet some friends for lunch in the same plaza that my bank was in (Josh likes to pretend that I didn't really have to go to the bank, and that I was just following him, but I promise that I did).

So they pulled into the plaza to meet their friends for lunch, and I pulled in to go to the bank.  I didn’t really think much of it. But on our way out, we spotted their Jeep across the parking lot. We all figured "Why not?" and decided to leave my number in the car. A few hours later, they called and we started to hang out together. Josh and I clicked, and the rest is history. That was six years ago, and we've been together ever since.

He proposed on our 5 year anniversary. I had no idea what was going on because it seemed to me that he was bringing me back to our hometown (we moved away for college) which is just about the lamest town to be from, and it was the last place I wanted to spend our anniversary. When we got there, he took me on a Jeep ride to the restaurant where he had lunch with his friends the day we met. When we were leaving and I got closer to the Jeep to climb in, I noticed that there was a note sitting on my seat. When I was close enough to read it, I saw that it said "Will you marry me?" I turned around to look at him and he was down on one knee with a ring. It was the SAME note that I had left him five years earlier! He flipped it over and wrote on the back of it. And I gotta say, being back home was the best place to be, because the first thing I wanted to do after that was to go see my mom!

  • Fun!

My FI and I met through a mutual friend.  The summer before I met my FI, I had been kindasorta just dating around although I had a HUGE crush on one guy.  Things didn't work out and I was venting to mutual friend about how I was never going to meet a guy and have things work out and I was just going to stop trying.  She said something along the lines of "I know the PERFECT guy for you...he's smart, he's funny, he's a college professor...and he has cystic fibrosis."  I heard the last part and was like, um, we'll see.  I kind of forgot all about it, TBH.  Then on Halloween, she invited me to sushi with a bunch of her friends.  FI was there (dressed as Dr. House!) and we wound up sitting next to each other.  I don't know if it was a set-up or not, but it worked!  She was completely right about him being perfect for me, too.

  • OK, I'll join in.

Everyone has such great stories!  Not sure if FI and I can compete in the fate side of things, but definitely in the length of knowing each other.

How did we meet?  We sat next to each other in 1st grade.  We went to a private school, class of 35 kids and spent 1st through 8th in the same class, generally sitting next to each other at least part of the year as our last names are next to each other in an alphabetical list.  8th grade, our class put on Hamlet, and he and I played Guildenstern and Rosencrantz (respectively).  We were also voted king and queen of the 8th grade graduation dance (though we weren't a couple at the time, just friends.  I was actually rather upste at the setup).  He also went with me to a winter formal in High School and we stayed in touch and stayed friends through HS and College.  He even handled the CD music for the ceremony at my 1st wedding.

When that marriage inevitably collapsed, he was there as a friend and put up with my random calls at random hours needing a friend or a shoulder to cry on.  Friendship built to more, and by the time my divorce was final, he and I were inseperable.  I was VERY nervous about being in a relationship so soon, and when he proposed about a year after the divorce was final, I said yes, but asked for a long engagement (2 years) just so I could make sure I was emotionally healed and stable and didn't bring in too much junk from the ex.

Now?  I can't wait for next year, and I wish I had seen this so much sooner in my life.

One thing to remember: The wedding is just one day. The marriage is all the rest of them.

  •  Hey Blondy I think your FI did extremely well in the romantic department considering that u do not think him to be the romantic type. I love how he carefully and thoughtfully mapped out your engagement!

Shows just how much he loves you.

All the best my dear and congratulations again!

At the end of that summer he came back for a week and asked me to be his gf...crazy me I said yes..and the next day he was back on a plane to Alberta...we dated for our first year with him flying back and forth to see me. eventually....

  • We met February of 2006 through friends. He played on the same boot hockey team as the husband of one of my friends. I had just gotten out of a serious relationship and was not looking to date, but thought no harm in meeting him. When we were introduced, he was so quiet. I thought he didn't like me! We went on our first date the following weekend and have been together ever since. Its been 6 years and counting. Whew! He proposed after 5 years of dating and we're doing a destination wedding in Jamaica, which was his idea. But I have been planning the rest. He's awesome!
