Trying to set a date, opinions please

I am considering doing December 26, 2015. My only reason is because I want to have my ceremony at Immaculate Conception while it's decorated for Christmas. How do you think people will feel about going to a wedding the day after Christmas?

Re: Trying to set a date, opinions please

  • You may want to consider if your local and out of town guests. If you have out of town guests or people in your wedding party who are from out of town, you will be requiring them to be traveling on christmas day or the morning of your wedding, the day after christmas, which will prove to have challenges. Also, with your wedding the day after christmas, when do you think your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner will be? The two days prior to your wedding are Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. I vote for another day. Why don't you try December 22nd the Saturday before Christmas? Churches will have Christmas decor up all Christmas Season.
  • I agree with alarche.  Any out of towners will have a struggle to get to your wedding.  (Price and logistics - wise) Even living in town people might have other obligations that day, for exapmle if they have blended families.  You'll also have some problems getting vendors, catering staff, etc. to work on the day after Christmas.  Especially anything that needs to be made the day before i.e. your wedding cake, flowers, food prep...  If, as you say, your only reason for choosing this day is the decorations, you have lots of other options that will be less of a headache for you and your guests.  Most Catholic churches will still be decorated through Epiphany - January 6th.  And most are decorated throughout the month of December, at least with poinsettas and greenery. You don't have to do it so close to Christmas to have the decorations up.  I would reconsider that date.  Go check out the church in earlier or later December, or early January, and I think it will be quite festive.  And good luck - I'm having a holiday wedding too (on January 6th -so we get to serve King Cake too!) and I know what you mean about loving the decorations!
  • The churches are usually still decorated for christmas till the first of the year, at least. It would be worth a call to see how long they usually keep the decor up. I would avoid doing it that day at all costs. Even earlier in the month would be better. I considered Dec. 29th but even then it would have been stressful on my guests. Prices were outrageous as well.
  • Thanks! I didn't even consider that the caterer and other vendors may not be able to do it. I was trying to squeeze in the Christmas decor at Immaculate Conception while the lobby of the Roosevelt was still decorated. I know Immaculate Conception decorates early, so I'm keeping my eye out for when the decorations go up this year. After reading your opinions, I'm thinking that it's probably not worth the headache just for the decorations. Thanks!
  • I would also check all the football bowl game dates that are in town- one of the girls I'm in a wedding with is getting married right after Christmas and they have to deal with a couple of bowl games.

  • Didn't think about bowl games either...Maybe we will just move it to March, that was my second choice. Does anyone know the fee to use the chapel at Sacred Heart? It's not on the school's website.
  • The Roosevelt stays decorated through January 6th - just saw an article on nola.com about their decorations today.
  • I would also recommend looking at each weekend and finding out what is going on in the city. We did this right from the beginning before even deciding anything else...trying to plan on a weekend with a game/convention would be craziness!!!
