Louisiana-New Orleans

Second Line Band

We are having a second line band for our reception.  We aren't going to second line from the ceremony to the reception because it is a bit of a walk.

But I am trying to decide if we should have the traditional second line band and music at the end of the reception...or if we should swtich it up and have it at the beginning.  If we have it at the beginning, I would use it as my intro as Mr. and Mrs.

Is anyone planning to do something different with a second line band?  or have any feedback of how it works best?

I'm planning to have a second line at the end of my reception to an after party on Bourbon Street.  Plus, my out of town guests aren't really accustomed to short reeceptions like we have in New Orleans.  I figure it will be a good way to get them to leave.  lol.

Oh, I'm dying to know... how long receptions are in New York? I can't imagine them being longer than we do down here.
I'm trying to decide on when to have our second line also. It's too far to walk for us too, but we're thinking of doing it around Jackson Square and then busing everyone to the reception.
We could do it after, though. That sounds like fun too!

Typically when I go to weddings in the Northeast where there is a cocktail hour, a seated plated dinner, dancing, cake cutting, bouquet toss, etc it can be like a 6 hour affair, not including the ceremony.  Things are not over until after midnight or later.  Most of the weddings I priced out in New Orleans were for a three hour reception.  My reception will end at 9:00 p.m.

Wow! That must be very expensive.

Well, everything in NYC is expensive :-) But as far as receptions go, most venues include 5-6 hours as a standard.

We've extended our time at the Bourbon Orleans Ballroom to 5 hours in addition to the cocktail hour because that's what our guests would be used to.  Midnight is a more typical end time for us.

Asbrick, I would have the 2nd line at the beginning to set the tone, and in case you have guests who leave before the end.
