out of town bride visiting venues - did I miss anything

Hi Brides,

I live in Atlanta and am in the midst of the beginning stages of planning. My fiancee and I are headed to New Orleans in Feb. to look at venues for a Feb. 2013 wedding. We have 3 days planned and I've booked tours of the following places. Please let me know if I've missed something that you think would work for me!

Here's a little info. about some ideals for me.
1. Ideally I'd like to have the reception and ceremony in the same place. My fiancee's mom has MS so walking from one place to another is not possible.
2. I would LOVE to have a seated dinner - although nearly everywhere I'm seeing is buffet. =(
3. We have about 100 guests (max)
4. We REALLY don't want to spend over $15,000

Here's where we are touring.

LaTrobe's On Royal

New Orleans Board of Trade

House of Blues

House of Broel

Musee Conti

Federal Ballroom

Lath House

Omni Royal New Orleans

Elms Mansion

Maison Dupuy

Venusian Gardens

Rosys Jazz Hall

The Foundry

Louisiana State Museum

  • You're forgetting Audubon Tea Room and the other Audubon venues. They do sit down dinners if you want.
  • Have you looked into the venues at City Park? Also if what you really want is a seated dinner, I would ask the venues if that's available and what the prices are. Most venues will "advertise" the buffet style since that's the norm down here. I'm sure they would do seated; it just may cost more. Looks like you'll have a busy 3 days. Good luck!

  • I live in Atlanta (Peachtree City area) as well and am getting married in NOLA (grew up in Slidell). We actually settled on Southern Oaks because they take care of every possible detail you can think of. Just makes wedding planning from afar so much easier! Hope that helps!

I think Latrobe's may be out of your price range.  They have a very high minimum.  You are missing Race and Religious as well as The Chicory, but I'm not sure if you are considering those options.

Just remember that most catering packages are based on a buffet reception of three hours.  If you want to accommodate a seated dinner, it will be much more expensive.
  • Thanks everyone! I've contacted the additional venues and will write a LONG e-mail post our visit.
  • I've heard wonderful things about the Foundry/ One of my bridesmaids just attended a wedding there and loved it.

If red wine is important to you, double check with your vendors, because some have a no red wine policy. It cut my list by about half.

  • Ah, red wine is VERY important! It's the only thing I drink.
  • We're getting married Feb 11 at the Bourbon Orleans Ballroom with seated dinner for 90. It was actually about 40% cheaper than the buffet reception prices. The only thing we're paying by the hour for is the open bar which is separate from the meal price anyhow. When we were researching last year, seemed to be the same with the Omni and the Royal Sonesta and no problem with red wine :-) They all had minimums within your budget but Latrobe's seemed to be out of your price range. Good luck with your visit.
  • I got married/had my reception at the Elms Mansion we had about 90 guests (they have a 100 person minimum for Friday and Sundays, 150 for Saturdays) so it seems like it might be exactly what you are looking for. All in all we spent just under 11K there, so that would still leave you with some additional money for a photographer, cake, florist, ect. We got married on a Sunday evening and I think we got some good deals with all our vendors having chosen to not get married on a Friday or Saturday. Judy at the Elms Mansion was extremely helpful and we were really happy with our choice.

You should also look into Gallier Hall. If you rent the second floor there are multiple rooms and you and your future hubby can get married in one room and have dinner in the next, You would have to rent chairs and tables (which they rent). You would also have to hire a caterer, I still think you could come out under budget by doing this. Good luck!
