Cathedral Brides

Anyone NOT decorating?  I am on a major budget, plus I don't want to distract from the amazingness the Cathedral already possesses....would I be crazy to not decorate?  It is just so big, I feel like to have flowers/decor even be noticeable you really have to go all out....

also is anyone's wedding soon?  I am so curious to hear how things go closer to the date...I feel kind of lost about the whole thing!  There's no contact between us and the church, and it just really makes me kind of nervous :)

Re: Cathedral Brides

  • While I'm not getting married at the Cathedral, I am getting married at St. Joseph Church on Tulane (another one of our city's big beautiful churches).  I too am on a serious budget (that I've just about blown) and am not decorating in the church.  The only thing I'm doing is tying lavender satin bows to every 10th pew just to make it wedding-y.  The old New Orleans churches are such beautiful architectural masterpieces that I think less is definitely more.  (IMO)

  • I am getting married at the Cathedral at the end of September and I am not decorating either.  Even at the beginning of my planning, before I knew just how much this wedding was going to cost me (haha), I had discussed foregoing flowers and decorations with both my planner and my florist.  They both agreed it really isn't necessary.  If I had gone with any decorations at that point, I surely would be chopping those out now for budget reasons.  The Cathedral is beautiful and stately on its own IMO.  My florist did suggest one tall, slender floral arrangement next to the lectern to help draw attention to the readers.  I did like that idea, and that is currently the plan, but if I am not able to stay under budget in the end, it will go and I'll be fine with not having it.

As far as lack of communication with the Cathedral, yes it makes me nervous too.  How much longer do you have?  I called them about 3 weeks ago just to touch base about my paperwork, confirm the deadline by when I need to make my payment for the balance, and by when my priest needs to get all of our paperwork in and request his delegation (he is coming with us from Texas).  When Sandra called me back, I went over everything we need paperwork-wise again, confirmed deadlines, and asked a few follow up questions about Communion.  It may have been redundant from their guidelines, but it made me feel better to talk to them on the phone one more time to confirm everything.  I'm sure I will call again at the end of June to make sure they have everything! :)

I don't think the Cathedral needs anything, it's going to get lost or take away from the beauty.  The Cathedral should be booked solid with weddings right now, and since they let people in to see the Cathedral during weddings, have you thought about peeking in one Saturday to get a feel for what other brides have done?
  • Thanks everyone!  That makes me feel better :)  My wedding isn't until November, so I do have time to have more contact with the coordinators in New Orleans, but it's all kind of strange to do it all over the phone!
