Second line

We plan on doing a second line parade following our reception.. and will head to Pat O's for our after party.  One of our favors is custom hankerchiefs.  Most of our guests are from out of town.. Do you guys have any suggestions on a way of explaining a second line parade to them?.. Perhaps a cute poem or something?... I plan on having the hankerchiefs in a little tray at the sign in table with a thank you note attached, but was thinking of having a little explanation of the second line framed and put near the tray so guests can read and understand that we will be seconding lining once the reception is over.

Thanks!

I think a framed explanation next to the hankies at the ceremony site is the way to go. You probably also ought to ask either someone at the venue or your bridal party to get started with handing out the hankies after you exit the venue (that's always how it happens at every wedding I've been to with a second line. Guests figure out what's going on pretty quickly).

I put this in my welcome letter :

What is a Second Line?  The modern second line came about during Mardi Gras when people would follow their favorite “Main Line” or marching band through the streets.  These fans and curious onlookers quickly became known as the “second line” or part two of a planned street parade.

What you need to know about the modern second line:

    1.       1. When in New Orleans, a newly married couple may choose to organize a Second Line Parade to escort their guests from the wedding site to the last destination of the evening.

    2. 2. 2.  It is tradition for all second-liners to dance “unconventionally” and wave white handkerchiefs to the music being played.

    3.       3. Have fun with us!
