Help!! Junior Bridesmaids Dresses!

My fiance's two little sisters (12 and 13) are going to be bridesmaids in our wedding. I want all of the bridesmaids to wear the same dress and we found a gorgeous dress that is age appropriate for my adult and teenage bridesmaids. The 12 year old is easily my tallest bridesmaid and will have no issue fitting in an adult dress, but the 13 year old is tiny, short and super skinny. Everyone says she should just get the smallest size and they'll be able to alter it, but I'm just super nervous about it. Has anyone been in this situation? Anyone had to have an adult dress altered for a junior bridesmaid? Were they able to do it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Can you post a link to the dress you are thinking of? Where are you ordering it? I think it depends on how intricate it is but if it's a relatively simple dress and you have a good seamstress it shouldn't be a problem.  The other thing you could do would be to find a dress that's different than the adult dress for the two of them, or let them each choose their own.  My fiance's niece (10 year old) was too old to be a flower girl but wouldn't have fit in the adult bridesmaid dresses so she just wore a different dress in a complimentary color and it looked fine.  Also, I wouldn't order it too far out from your wedding date because at that age she could easily have a growth spurt or start seeing big changes in her body over the course of just a few months.
  • I thought about a different dress, but height wise, the younger of the two sisters is actually going to be taller than my adult bridesmaids and I feel like the older would be insulted if she had to wear a different dress and her younger sister didn't. I don't have the picture right now but it's fairly simple. It almost looks like a halter, but its actually straps. That's one of the reasons I picked it because we figured they could easily sew up the cleavage area a little higher on the younger girls to make it appropriate.
  • I bet you'll be fine. I agree that if I were the older one I wouldn't want to be singled out.   Depending on your fabric choice this might get a little expensive for the seamstress to do - I'm guessing you asked the girls' parents for a budget or maybe you're paying yourself so just make sure you take alterations into account.  I'd probably go show a seamstress the dress and a swatch of the fabric and ask for an estimate. It's totally reasonable to ask the girls' parents for their current measurements as well and maybe they won't be too far off if the dress comes in petite sizes.
  • I remember when I was 13 and in a wedding.  Back when I was *much* tinier.  We ordered a 0 and got it tailored and it fit perfectly.  You'll be fine!
  • Just depends on how "mature" the dress is. I know I have a 12 and a 10 year old Jr bridedmaids but my bridesmaid dress I feel is too mature for them. So I am picking a different dress for them. But any dress really can be taliored to them.

</div><div>I totally agree with this.  Some dresses will look in bad taste, even if altered properly, on a younger girl.  I had a 10 year old jr bridesmaid.  We picked a strapped completementary dress in the same material and color as the main bridesmaid's dresses.  Worked out wonderfully!  YOu can see below:</div><div>

  • Thanks ladies! I know the style is appropriate for both the young girls and adult bridesmaids. I chose the dress because I knew it would be classy and appropriate for both. The bridal salon keeps telling me they'll be able to do it, but I guess I just wanted to hear that it'd been done!
