NWR: help me find somewhere to eat

Hey all. Btw, I used to post as QueenJane, for those who've been around that long. Second, I'll be in Nola next week and I need some help. I'm on a pretty strict diet. I'm planning to get fruits and veggies at the market, but I'm more concerned on where I can get a healthy breakfast like plain egg whites/fruit/toast and grilled chicken or fish for lunch. Our room will not have a microwave or fridge. We're staying at the Prince Conti, so in the quarter or Marigny is ideal. Also, any suggested jogging routes, or areas to stay away from? TIA

Re: NWR: help me find somewhere to eat

  • this time of year I would jog on the treadmill in the hotel :)  I have run tons of races down there, but truthfully I don't know what the roads are like when traffic is in progress....I would say down St. Charles is one of your best/safest bets.   You can go down as far as you like and then turn around. starting in the french quarter and going down st. Charles and looping through Audobon Park and back is over 10 miles...
or go up esplanade to city park (prettier route), round trip about 7 miles.  Alternatively drive or get dropped off in either park and do loops around...they are both pretty big.  I am sad that you are coming to Nola on a diet!!  :)  Good luck to you though.  I am not much help there besides to say that nearly all restaurants have healthy salad choices and grilled meats and fish.  I had a great salad at Crescent City Brewhouse a couple of weeks ago....seared ahi tuna and veggies...really yummy!  And you can get shrimp remoulade anywhere, and just get the dressing on the side.
  • Brooke is exactly right as far as the running goes. Running up esplanade is indeed beautiful, tho there might be a few blocks that are slightly sketchy. If it's during the day you should be ok. St Charles would be the safest best. you could always take the street car to audobon and run there. Or along the riverfront might be nice with the breeze coming off the river. I like to exercise along the lake but you'd need a ride up there.

as far as healthy food in New Orleans, that's not easy! I'm a vegetarian too so i rarely go out to eat, especially in the quarter area. I have never been but I've heard very good things about a place called 13 in the marigny. http://www.13monaghan.com/

same goes for a place called Green Goddess http://greengoddessnola.com/

Ive been wanting to check out both of those places.

  • It makes me sad too, Brooke. But, I'm doing really well with my weight loss and we will be back in October to indulge, so I'll make up for it then.
  • When I was in New Orleans last month FI and I had a nice breakfast at Cake Cafe & Bakery located on Chartress in Marigny and it was awesome !  Everything was so fresh & tasted great, they have egg white omelettes, fresh fruit & the lunch menu looked great with lots of healthy options. We really enjoyed it.

Don't get hung up on the name, I think they started as a bakery but expaned to a pretty nice cafe.

Here is their yelp page with has a link to their website/menu

Uuuuggghhhhh I freaking love Cake Cafe. Their shrimp and grits are to die for.
  • Satsuma! On Dauphine and Piety- Fresh juice, quiona and kale salads, egg white omlettes, even gluten-free/vegan baked goods. They're great.
Sound Cafe on Port and Charters- good, low-fat sandwiches and salads depending on the day.
I'd also check out Maurepas Foods- Burgundy and Louisa- They're relatively new. They don't have breakfast but they do open early (11) and have a ton of good diet/wallet friendly options.
Other than that- I'd look at Cowbell in the Riverbend, really good food and lots of different healthy options.
Mona's on Frenchman or Magazine (2 locations)- is supercheap Lebanese food and has really good salads and things. (you probably already know about Mona's though.)
Someone else already mentioned 13, I think.
Another not breakfast but good for you and good tasting option is The Wandering Budda- Vegan Korean food. Delicious and they deliver everywhere. Located inside the Hi-Ho Lounge- St. Claude and Marginy St.
Wasabi (frenchman), Kyoto (Prytania, uptown), and Hana (Hanson St, Riverbend) all have decent sushi for not bad prices.
Mimi's has various tapas for ok prices, if you'd like to have a drink with your meal. Royal St. and Franklin Ave.
    For fancy dinners,
Sylvain, right off Jackson Sq on Charters has a lot of good diet options as does Iris on S.Peters right after the Decatur St. split. I think it's actually inside of Hotel Beinville.
    Hope it helps!

  • Oh thank you! Satsuma sounds like exactly what I need.
