Taking a consensus re: bar

I've seen a lot of debate on cash bar vs. open bar so let's not get into that here!  My question is, has anyone ever been to a wedding where, instead of having an unlimited bar, each guest received a certain number of drink tickets?  Would this be more tacky as opposed to a cash bar?  Or would it be nicer than a cash bar?  This would be for a two-hour reception where it seems unlikely that we would get our money's worth from an open bar.  I'm putting this on the local board since I know people from other parts of the country might feel differently about it.  Thanks!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

I've been to a few. Personally, I don't feel that it's tacky. You're providing alcohol for your guests, without breaking the bank as well as putting a cap on those that are looking to get hammered for free. Who can fault you? How many tickets are you considering per person? I've been to one with 3 per, and one with 4 per. I felt the 4 was better than the 3.

Also, I saw a lot of non-drinkers passing their tickets off to others who did drink, and according to the bride, all but a few of the tickets were used, and she didn't receive any complaints.

    HTH, and good luck!

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm trying to do...provide options without breaking the bank, and cap those who feel entitled to get sloppy.  I will have to think about the number of tickets for a two-hour reception so I was glad for your input on that, I was thinking two or three but like you said the drinkers can get an extra ticket from the non-drinkers.  And considering they could wander right into the French Quarter for an afterparty if they want... :-)

hahaha, that is very true! none of the weddings I'm referring to were in the big easy, which makes a HUGE difference! let the sloppy ones get drunk AFTERWARDS in the best place in the world to do so :p

Ok maybe I lie, I went to 2 weddings in Mississippi and they were DRY weddings. no alcohol what so ever so imagine my surprise. One of them didn't even have music at the reception. But I guess in my family, all have been open bar, it is almost expected. My uncle hates wedding during Lent bc he gives up beer and can't drink. lol

kate, I just went to my first dry wedding! I didn't even know they existed! Thankfully it was in a hotel hall, and there was a bar right next door! (wow, I sound like an alcoholic,) but they wouldn't allow you to bring anything alcoholic into the reception hall. The irony of it was they played death metal through the entire reception, which kind of made for a contrasting theme.

yeah really, i'm getting ready to go to another no music/alcohol wedding in november. It is at a church. so def no alcohol. i was more caught off guard by the no music than the no alcohol....not even elevator music in the background. Talk about culture shock! My fiance's family is used to those types of weddings so I can't wait until they come to ours and see what a new orleans wedding is like.

hahaha, I know just what you mean. Part of Fi's family is mormon, and they're all relatively conservative in most ways. Fortunately they know us well enough that I think a little bit of funk will be expected!
