Second line 101 for the out of town bride

I have a few questions for you second line veterans since I have never been to one:

1.  We got a great deal on a Monday night reception in the French Quarter--the day really didn't matter since this is a destination wedding for us and our guests--is it ok to do a second line on a Monday?  Will it still be fun not being on a Fri/Sat night?

2.  Is it ok to do the second line at the end of a reception (maybe 9:30pm-ish?).  We only have 3 hours at our venue.

3.  Do we need to get our own umbrellas?  Any suggestions on where to do this so we don't have to fly down with them?

4.  Any other tips/suggestions/things I should know would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Second line 101 for the out of town bride

  • Congratulations!  The second line was hands down one of th most amazing experiences that I had at my wedding.  My friend said you can never walk down Bourbon Street again and feel the same when you don't have an entourage of people behind you and a million people taking your photo.

    To answer your questions:
    1. I think second lines are exciting no matter what, but there definitely won't be as many people around to watch your second line on a Monday night.  For me, it was thrilling to not only interact with our guests but with all of the people that we encountered on the way to our destination.  I have some great shots with random people that happened to second line along with us in the Quarter.

    2. I did my second line following my reception around 9:30 p.m.  We went to an after party at another location, but I've also been to a wedding line where we second lined back to the reception site.  Either is really fine.

    3. I don't think the bands provide them, so if you want one, yes.  There are lots of places to purchase them from, but a friend made mine for me.

Congratulations!! We are having a Sunday night wedding and I'm not at all concerned about it not being as much fun. We have vacationed in NOLA a few times and there were always people around, particularly on Bourbon. It won't be as busy, but I think the benefits of a non-traditional day far outweigh the smaller crowds. Planning is infinitely easier as any vendor we wanted was available, plus we received discounts from almost everyone. We are also doing a 10 p.m. Second line, but haven't decided wherer to yet. I think it will be more fun once everyone has loosened up with a few drinks...don't think they'll care as much as that point about crowd size, either. ;) I am making our umbrellas and traveling with them, but I'm sure there are many places you could find them once you're down there. Or you can have them custom made by a NOLA vendor and just pick them up when you're in town. Www.secondlineumbrella.com is just one of several sources. Good luck and happy planning!!
  • NOLA Umbrellas--they are on Facebook. We saw them at a bridal show and they had a nice selection. 504-237-0890>>ask for Kristen.
