Alterations in New Orleans area

Hey all! Has anyone ever used/heard anything about Bee's Tailor in Metairie (by the TJ Maxx) for wedding dress alterations? The lady there came highly recommended by a friend of a friend (yeek), but there is no way I would take my dress there without at least one tried-and-true experience.

If not, does anyone know of any reliable and inexpensive places to get alterations done in the greater New Orleans area? Or are those two things mutually exclusive?

Re: Alterations in New Orleans area

  • Bab's in Kenner- works out of her home 504-214-1101

    Takes weekend or evening appointments.

She's doing my bustle and making my veil, as well as steaming my dress and creating a dress bag out of a sheet so the dress won't wrinkle shoved back in the bag for $160 I think.

Also, my length was almost perfect with my shoes on and she DIDN'T try to say it needed altering.

  • Geez, I wish I still had Elvia's number. She also works out of her home in Kenner and does an amazing job for CHEAP! The lady from Pearl's Place (ugh) gave me her number.
  • DO NOT USE BEE'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They are great for everyday items but they do  not know what they are doing for wedding dresses.  I had a fairly simply dress that nearly fit perfectly off of the rack; I just needed a hem, a few stitches at the bust and bustle.  At the first fitting about 4 weeks before my wedding, they seemed very knowledgeable and I had no worries.  They told me the dress would be finished the next week, but when I went back, they inserted elastic at the top of my dress.  It looked horrible and I had no idea why they put in elastic when the bust just needed a few stitches.  It took multiple fittings and at one point I thought that they ruined my dress.  The fitting two days before my wedding was the worst because I was crying the entire time because I didn't think they would ever get it right.  They finally got the hem right but my bustle fell out at the reception. Thankfully, I had packed safety pins and my friends made an impromptu bustle.

The other issue about Bee's is that they don't steam dresses, so it is not ready to wear when you get it back from Bee's.   Thank God I was able to find a dry cleaner to steam my dress in 1 day after the alterations were finally finished.  (David's Bridal refused to steam my dress because I brought it elsewhere to have the alterations done... I had no idea that they wouldn't steam my dress because I didn't have the alterations done there!)

I hate to see any bride go through stress with her dress the week of her wedding.  Thankfully, it all worked out for me, but I had to re-arrange my entire schedule the week of the wedding to deal with the alteration/steaming issues.

  • Along this same line, can anyone reccommend someone in the area who can convert a regular dress to a corset back? My prom dress still fits everywhere except for the fact that it won't zip in the back, and the style already lends itself to a corset type back.

And thanks for the heads up about David's Bridal not steaming your dress if you don't get the alterations done there. :(

  • Elvia's # is 504-467-0767. She did my wedding dress, my moms dress and some of my bridesmaid's dresses and all of them came out perfect!
  • Thanks for all of the great reviews ladies!
