pre-ceremony photos around Jackson Square

My fiance and I are doing all of our photos before the ceremony (along with the wedding party) and I have my heart set on some authentic "New Orleans" photos around Jackson Square.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a good spot for "alley" shots and Jackson Square photos?  I will also have everyone on a mini-bus, so I don't want it to be a logistical nightmare just to get these shots.

Any feedback would be great!

I had my heart set on Jax Square for engagement photos. My photog informed me that if you are within the fence part in the middle, you have to pay $50 for a permit. Keep in mind that you will be conspicuous and will probably not be able to get away with being in a dress for lots of pics without a permit.

Anyway, we ended up taking pictures inside a friend's house that lives in the Quarter... along beautiful old New Orleans-y brick walls and stuff like that. I'm not sure if you would want to consider that as an alternative maybe. Pirate's Alley would probably work though for an alley shot.

Our pics came out really, really awesome and I'm going to have a super tough time deciding which to choose for our Save the Dates!

Pirate's Alley to the left of the Cathedral is really cool and a great place for pictures.  We took some there before our rehearsal.  Consider maybe just you and your fiance taking pictures out there instead of the entire wedding party.  It may be a huge headache trying to organize everyone based on the size of your wedding party and how much time you have.  Plus, you will have fun walking around just you two and your photographer.  Those are some of my favorite shots from my wedding because it's just us, we are talking and laughing and they just came out great.  Also, plan enough time to get to your ceremony site and touch-up and relax.  I was sweating and the wind was out of control so my hair needed a little TLC when we got inside.  It can be done, but plan for more time than you would think you actually need.  You never know about traffic, etc...that may  become an issue.  Good luck!!

Ditto about the permit for Jackson Square.  From experience, someone will swoop in to see the permit within 3 minutes.

Do you have a photographer booked yet?  They should know where the unique places are to highlight the city, colors, architecture.  If you haven't check out Babs Evangelista - she's AMAZING!!!

I don't have many tips, but ditto PP who mentioned getting a permit if you want any pictures inside the fenced area. We got kicked out right away :(

  • I am using Matthew Foster for my photography and got engagement pictures taken (for my mom for Christmas. :) ) in October.  We used the alley to the right of the Cathedral if you standing in the fenced area of Jackson Square and looking at the Cathedral. (Not sure if this is Pirate's Alley?).  Anyway, the pictures in this area came out as my favorite.  They were absolutely BEAUTIFUL and I had to stop myself from ordering all of 'em from that one scene. haha.  It might be small for a wedding party though.

We also went up on the roof of the Omni and took photos that overlooked Jackson Square... HIGHLY recommend that as the backdrop is amazing.
